At Croatia (particularly my town) if a woman speaks French it's highly applauded.

Well, I'm not surprised. French, Spanish, and Italian are all based on Latin so one would assume that at least a few words and phrases will be a little similar...

Actually, most European languages have been at least influenced by Latin. Spanish is a direct desendant, for that matter. Apart from Italian, which is even more obvious. And no wonder, providing Rome conquered Europe.
