Dorl'veszaun looked to the others then spit into the darkness. He held his spear in the same hand as his shield then took out a dagger which glowed with the brilliance of pure energy, illuminating the black wall before him. He cursed and launched the dagger to stab into the wall of blackness.

"Careful, you might hit--" Ven reaches out to stay the paladin's hand but isn't quick enough. He winces, waiting to hear the sound of Elwyn yelping in pain. When no sound is forthcoming he just shakes his head.

"Everyone just hold tight a moment. Visual scans don't seem to be working so I'm switching to echolocation."

He makes a few adjustments to his HUD, rifle raised and at the ready as he keeps a bead drawn on that inky curtain of darkness.

*Facepalm* "Fine, Im going to have to get him myself if no one is daring enough to reach out and grab him"

Gareth reaches out his arm and feels around in the inky blackness, Looking for Elwyn, He feels a sleeve of a shirt and the warm wet spot of blood where Dorl'veszaun had thrown the dagger.

"Oh god Elwyn, Are you okay? Where did the dagger hit, I can't see."

The bard just chakes his head and sighs. "I knew I should have warned him not to throw it."

He thinks for a moment, then slowly reaches into the darkness with one hand, then a foot follows, until he finally decides to put his head through. It's pitch black, but he can smell blood, and he feels around for Elwyn, or anything else, for that matter. His foot lands in something wet, and he ducks down to feel what it is. It's sticky.

"Can you fellows hear me? We may have a problem."

Dorl'veszaun cursed and cast a light spell on his shield as he too, walked into the darkness.

Ven watches the little troupe disappear into the uncertain curtain.

"For Seroth's sake," he mutters. "This is why they gave me one in ten odds of making it back."

He shakes his head. There's nothing else for it; the only thing that matters is retrieving the artifact. Survival is a secondary concern.

The Lieutenant purposefully doesn't think about the fact that if he gets killed [i:1hizlxml]before[/i:1hizlxml] achieving his goal, then the point is moot. Instead he holds his breath and steps through...almost tripping over Lothir in the process.

"Oof! Watch your step," warns the bard, as someone nearly falls over him in the dark. "I think something happened to Elwyn. There's something wet on the ground, and he appears to be down. Can't tell if he's dead, though...."

He stands up, wondering who he was just talking to. <Can't see a blasted thing,> he curses mentally. <Why don't our lights work? Is it that strong?> Even his darkvision is still useless, which means the darkness is both powerful, and magical. Only one thing left to do, then...

"Stand back, friends," he says after a moment. "I'm going to try to dispell this- anyone with magic on them who doesn't want it cut off- get back out." He calls out a spell, concentrating hard on overcoming the darkness. "xuz d'isto, sila rath l'ssussun- oloth, tlu alus!"

A moment later, there is a brief flicker, and the darkness melts away into ordinary shadows in the tunnel.

Ven lets out a colorful oath and scrambles out of the spell's range. Most of his gear isn't magical, but he does have several extradimensional pockets all over his armor. The last thing he needs right now is to have his equipment (including a fair amount of explosives) scattered all over the tunnel.

He turns back to the others. "Is that Elwyn? Is he alright? Step aside, please. I can't see..."

He touches a hip panel in a quick sequence and a small first aid kit appears in his hand. He approaches the gathering and does his best to firmly but gently move the large drow and the tiefling out of the way, or at least slip between the two.

Dorl'Veszaun cursed and backed out as the bard dispelled the darkness. Once he could see elwyn again he kneeled over him and began praying to Kelemvor to heal the odd human.

Gareth began to keel over and pull the dagger out of the wound and stitch it up. He gives it a light tug and the dagger clatters to the ground, He then pulled out a needle and thread and began to work.

"We should rest here for the night, if we run into anything Elwyn might not be able to fight, And besides, i can fell the fatigue starting to set in on all of us."

Lothir considers for a moment. "Yes, you might be right. I was traveling for a long time before I ran into you all. What do you suppose happened to him?" he says, looking the human over for some sign of what befell him. "Odd, I don't see what could have caused this. It's like he just- fell over. Wonder why nothing happened to any of us? Some sort of trap that only affects humans?"

"Trap? No, Dorl just threw a dagger and it hit him in the arm. Perhaps you can all learn to be more careful..."

Elwyn shook his head, and tried to stand up, metallic sand pouring off his skin as he moved, "What did I miss," He seems not to notice the dagger wound on his arm, or Gareth stitching the wound. Suddenly, and with out warning, his head snaps up to an obviously uncomfortable angle, and he starts to chuckle, "Ah, so you have come past it. The reason none of you were affected was because you do not fear the dark. A funny thing, fear, believe in it enough, and it can kill you." Elwyn's head drops to the floor, unconscious again.
A fight need not end with the death of participant. A fight also ends when the desire to do violence is gone.

He stares down at the human, dumbfounded. "Afraid of the dark? Who knew?" He chuckles, then turns to Gareth. "Actually, I guess that answers both of our questions. It wasn't the dagger after all, it was his own fear that did it. A trap of sorts, after all."

Dorl'veszaun placed his hands on the human's arm and a golden light shown beneath them. When he stood, cursing, Elwyn's arm was completely healed.
