Good Old Games[/url:ha2tjt3y], the online store specializing in older games, has signed a deal with Activision to make some of their older games available. First to be added are Sierra's 1993 point-and-click adventure game Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers[/url:ha2tjt3y] (with the voices of Tim Curry, Mark Hamill and Michael Dorn) and Troika Games' 2001 RPG Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura[/url:ha2tjt3y].
I've never actually played Arcanum before, but as I understand it's a pretty good RPG (for the time) that follows the tradition of Fallout. Which is no surprise since the (now defunct) Troika Studios was founded by former Fallout developers. I'm having trouble connecting to metacritic at the moment, but GameStats list an average score of 8.0[/url:ha2tjt3y] (out of six reviews), the highest of which being IGN's 8.7[/url:ha2tjt3y].
The only problem with Troika Studios' games is that they tend to be quite buggy. And as I understand Arcanum is no exception. A quick search showed that the latest patch should be 1.0.7.4 and there are unofficial patches available as well. For example, should be able to get all of them at Terra Arcanum[/url:ha2tjt3y] (though I haven't tried downloading or applying them yet).
I might pick this one up; I've always been curious of the game and I think that I'll be able to stand the dated graphics. Never bought anything at GOG before though. Either way, first I've got some Mass Effect 2 to play anyway.
Gabriel Knight and Arcanum won't be the only Activision back-catalog games added to GOG as GOG reports[/url:ha2tjt3y]:
[quote:ha2tjt3y][b:ha2tjt3y]In a landmark deal for the DRM-free digital distribution movement, Activision Publishing Inc. is bringing a wide range of classic games to GOG.com![/b:ha2tjt3y]
It's now official, we're bringing you the biggest announcement in GOG.com's history - Activision with it's wealth of PC gaming gems has joined our DRM-free family. With the announcement we're revealing first two classics which should be instantly recognizable to any fan of good, old games: Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura[/url:ha2tjt3y] and Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers[/url:ha2tjt3y]. Other games from the Activision catalogue will be unveiled gradually in the coming weeks, so expect more from this publisher during Month of Activision on GOG.com![/quote:ha2tjt3y]
Which other games that'll be is a mystery right now, but with access to all of Vivendi's games (including Sierra & Blizzard) there's definitely plenty of riches there. Perhaps we'll see Troika's "The Temple of Elemental Evil" or some of Sierra's old adventure games.
For now though Arcanum seems like a good start.
