"Very impressive, no I meant that our blades, bows, and crossbows are maid of materials not available here," said Calia. "Back home though we have some that can manipulate the weave; most of our mages are just masters of the slight of hand."
She took a sip from her waterskin then said, "Many on my world have no idea that what is known as magic actually works. We of our Drow population even don't openly use our limited inate powers of the weave. Though our natural ability to see in near complete darkness helps out. In our military we have goggles that allow the Rivvin to see in the dark as well as any Drow, but as you can guess they aren't issued to Drow soldiers for one obvious reason; we don't need them."

Drow on the Surface face as many dangers as those in the Underdark. Just because the Rivvil is friendly does not mean he wishes to help you, he may just want to get you off guard before knifing you.

Adian coughed before Zazzt could say anything more.
"This 'Earth' you describe sounds amazing," he said. "And I can easily imagine many who would very much like to see or even move to a place where we are treated as equals. It is also comforting to learn that there are places where the Spider Queen does not hold power over us. I am sure Lady Veladorn would be very interested in speaking with you.
"Perhaps further talk of this might be better done on the road, though," he said gesturing towards the other members of the group. "As you have seen it has been an eventful day, and we will be in need of rest...particularly the children with us. May I suggest we find someplace to retire for the remainder of the night? Away from this village."

Looking over her party, Nedylene nodded in agreement, "Yes, we should get our rest and perhaps we should share the duties of the night watch between your party and mine Dalninil Calia."
Then Nedylene got up from the bucket she had been sitting on and moved over to a place in the stables that her elder Daughter had made a bed for her on some hay.
"We all need some rest. Adain, Calia, you two select who will stand watch tonight." Nedylene then took her leave and went behind the partition that Delia made from blanket.

Adian's eyes widened.
[i:3kd3opqu]ME?[/i:3kd3opqu]
This was unexpected. He bowed, trying to cover his nervousness. Nedylene and Calia would certainly know their people than he did...
"Well," he said. "Most of our group have been riding all day, but...I think maybe Berevar and perhaps Delia would be good for the first shift. Rangers' senses tend to be sharper than most. I also volunteer myself. Zazzt could use the sleep to regain his spell use, I imagine..."

Zazzt nodded, "Aye, I could use some sleep, that cleric cost me quite a few divination spells, I must admit... However, I would volunteer Laraun, he is very accomplished scout, with a few items that are very useful for watch, and has already been scouting the area for most of our discussion." He took off one of his rings, and gave it to Adian, "That will allow you to communicate with him, no matter the distance, unless you plan to travel across Faerun." With that, he pulled out his tent, and crawled inside once it expanded. The door flashed blue, indicating it was warded, and that was that. Laruan walked into their camp, "Nothing worth losing any sleep over within a mile from here. Or not that I've seen... and they'd have to be invisible, incorporeal, and on another plane for that." He smiled.

"You honor me with your trust," Adian said as Zazzt retreated into his tent.
Still...having communion with an assassin made Adian a little uneasy. Nevertheless he plunged on. He turned to Laruan, determined to be professional.
"That is good to know," he said. "Would you be adverse to joining the night watch? First or second shift are available. Unless you are fatigued?"

"Nay, I can take the first shift, and by the look on your face, you do not trust me," Laraun sighed, "While I may be an assassin, I do have certain rules of the trade, and those are holier to me than the gods. Do not fear, I will not turn on you, if you are Zazzt's friend."

Adian was about to comment that he wasn't sure if Zazzt befriended anyone, but was reminded of the ring he had been given.
"Then I do not fear you," Adian said simply. "First watch for you then. I shall count on you to watch my back as we share the night."
He looked to Calia and the others.
"Suggestions?" he asked. "Objections?

Laraun nodded, and stifled a yawn, "There really isn't anything to fear within a mile of this area, but, to be safe..." He reached into his pocket, and pulled out a handful of different animal figurines, "I can look through the eyes of these, but they only last for 2 hours a day. Zazzt made them, and they have proven invaluable for these types of things." He took a deep breath, and exhaled it on his animals, which came to life, a pair of crows flew off into the air, a snake slithered off into the underbrush, and a squirel ran up a tree. "There we go, we should be able to relax a little."

[i:4ttiss6r]Except for the humans,[/i:4ttiss6r] Adian thought.
[center:4ttiss6r]* * *[/center:4ttiss6r]
Fortunately there was no trouble to be found that night, and the morning saw the much-grown band stirring and packing their equipment and mounts for the journey. Adian was particularly fascinated by the weaponry of the newcomers, seeing them clearly for the first time in the light. Their bows in particular were very strange in his eyes. Metallic, but not, strung with thin cord that was not made from any sinew or other material he recognized.
He was also nervous. He was guiding a much larger group than he had anticipated, and he kept worrying about what to do if any number of complications cropped up. What if some of them got lost, if there was an organized ambush of some kind, where would the group find enough food and water, and any number of other scenarios he was completely unprepared for. Perhaps Lady Veladorn would have been better served if she had sent someone more experienced in the wild.

Zazzt stepped on his carpet, Laruan slightly behind him, bow laying unstrung across his lap, "Where to now, Adon?"

"The road would, of course, be faster," Adian said, but his tone was dubious. "But the closer we get to Waterdeep the more people we are likely to meet. People who, despite Waterdeep's famed openess, are unlikely to see such a large group of our kind as anything but a threat. Which, in a way, I suppose we are."
Adian wished he could have taken credit for that bit of wisdom but he had been briefed extensively about the trip from and to the Promenade by Ilirene Anbryun, the most well-travelled member of the Promenade. He thought, trying to weigh the risks against expediency.
"Perhaps we should remain with the road today, and then split off from it the next. The place we must go is a grove a distance outside the city walls...a place blessed by the Maiden. Once we get within a days ride of the city, I have a way to lead us straight to the grove."
The sight of Kaeli packing her things caught his eye...her golden hair was very distracting. All the surface elves in the Promenade were Moon Elves, all with varying shades from black to dusky brown. Her brilliant hair was completely new to him, even after these few days.
His inattention caused him to drop a waterskin, spilling half of it before he could recover it.

Calia Tyne had been listening in on the coversation. To her it was odd to think that her people were viewed as a threat, but then again nearly all the Drow on her homeworld were Eilistraee followers, the Lolthite were extinct on Earth. Also the Drow were the most numerous of the Elves there too. She quietly laughed to herself as she thought, [i:3jetzhoi]Also we are the ones that most adapted to technology the others were to bound to nature.[/i:3jetzhoi] At that moment she thought of the disassembled FN P-90 in her pack along with its five magazines. [i:3jetzhoi]Nope it remains there; swords, daggers, and bows are the weapons of choice here. so that is what I will use.[/i:3jetzhoi]
Delia Rahn looked at the new Drow Ranger as she walked along side the little column of Drow-kin. "So Dalninil, what's you home world like?"
"Noisy and busy," said Calia as she watched the surrounding country side for trouble. It was becoming more wilderness the further they traveled the farms and villages were getting fewer and fewer. The sparseness reminded Calia of eastern Colorado, especially that seventy mile long stretch of highway between Walsenburg and La Junta. "Though there are areas of great beauty and grandure. In my home state in my home nation we have a tract of prairie that is preserved as a National Preserve located in the Flint Hill in the central part of my state. It's called the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve. It is beautiful with great vistas where the horizon seems to stretch out forever. It is one of my favorite places when I am home to go and to meditate. We still practic Reverie there and meditation helps to sooth my soul after some of my missions. Though most now are exploration missions like this one."

Zazzt nodded at the P-90, "You must be the queen of a nation of great power and wealth to have a weapon like that, perhaps our party would benefit if we were taught the spells that created that... strange weapon?"
