Tradetown...ideas for a new RP thread.

When you want to ask out of character questions, discuss plots, talk about roleplaying or simply present your character’s bio, this is the place to do so. Small OOC bits may be accepted in the roleplaying forums, but this is the place for the larger posts. Do keep the topics related to the roleplaying however, otherwise go to the General Discussion forum.

Tradetown...ideas for a new RP thread.

Post by zellak »

As we have not heard from the DM of "Karazan ...the new city" for a month, i would like to restart something along the same lines.

This type of RP is the kind of thing that interests me. :)

So here is the basic idea.

A small town on a river, populated by zero level / normal men, is close to a set of standing stones, they allow one way access into the demiplane.

Tradetown (name can be changed), is home to Eleven factions.

Catfolk (Rakasta in 3E ??) (Sherriff and peacekeepers) Uptown

Drow Traders (Eilistraee followers) Uptown

Drow Craftsman (Eilistraee followers) Downtown

Drow farmers northside (Vaeraunite followers)

Drow farmers eastside (other side of the river -Lolth followers)

Kenku farmers west side ( Thoth followers)

Drow farmers southside (Eilsitraee followers)

Ibixian Loggers farwest ( forrest spirit-god)

Deurgar silver miners far east

Lizard folk boaters... live on the river.

Wood Elves Hunters /Furriers ( Ranger stockade) Far south

The factions are paired , helping one means annoying the other.

The PCs roll into town and attempt to help various factions and bring them under the control of their "House/Organisation.

Each house has 5 action points to spend each season.

Each turn is a season.

All the roleplay will take place during the "Council Hall Meeting" of each season.

There would be 3 phases to each season.

1/ agenda phase- where the DM details problems to be solved.

2/ the Council Meeting roleplayed. (players bid)

3/ Season Report , DM gives a rundown of how things were resolved. And players report how the problem was resolved.

Edit....The players spend their action points on ;

1 AP to set up a base/headquarters
(one per player- +3 influence on faction at that location )

1 AP spent on gaining influence with a faction. (Choose)

1 AP starting a rumour about a PC/NPC,
destroying or discrediting anothers influence.

1 AP bid during the Council Meeting.
(in order to resolve the towns issues/problems...and thereby gaining Influence with various factions)
Highest bid wins.

All ideas welcome. :)

Opposed factions ;

Catfolk peacekeepers & Drow Traders < > sticky fingered Kenku

Eilstraee farmers < > Lolth Farmers

Vaehraunite farmers < > Duergar miners

Drow traders (management)< >(workers) Lizardfolk boatpeople

Wood Elves < > Ibix loggers.

Drow craftsmen < > Gnome craftsmen in the next town upriver.

I have no idea how a player vs player would be done online .

So i'm open to ideas.

i would suggest that each players House/Organisation/Party/Whatever ? would have a maximum of Forty levels/Hit dice and the highest level allowed be 15.

ie, Sliggoth the Lizardman lvl 15

3 henchmen level 5 (shaman) /level 5 (warrior)/ Lvl 5 (warrior)

5 lizardmen @ 2 HD

Total 40

Dont worry to much about rulebooks.

Have fun...make stuff up. :)

Player vs. player online is not a problem.

Oh, PC vs. PC online is not a problem, we do not want people trying to kill each other.

We in fact had an arena set up for characters to basically test their battle skills. Yes Snarg can try to kill any character that comes within reach of his claws.

The one basic understanding is with PC vs. PC that skill/power levels be about the same. It is not fun if a first level vs. a grand mage and the later issues "Power Word Kill" as first attack. Such unbalanced fights clearly end combat quickly and often results in a player wanting to attack player (something that should never occur).

As such PC vs. PC should be approached with care. Set rules for combat, set level limts, set terms for victory and defeat. Resolve any rules disputes OOC, if needed request an other to act as a DM as to what should be considered fair.

Thanks for the info. :)

i will work out some kind of simple combat resolution rules.

Perhaps with each character, PMing the DM with the target of the attack and their combat mode.

3 modes .....All Out / Protected / Evasive.

Both get 1d6 /level, and then ratio the win/lose pips on the mode table.

Give the players the result , and they write up what happens.

Just an idea off the top of my head.

Yes a system is required that is considered fair.

Power balance clearly needs to be considered fair at the start.

As for success or failure, one system I encountered was number of post. This of course can not be used directly. What might work could be time stamp, however a very adept player could make sure all posts would post in a way that would always succeed.

The base system was an attempt worked if number was even, if failed if number was odd. With time stamps to seconds there clearly is a random factor, however with our time stamp being by minute it clearly can become possible to time a combat to always post odd or even. This system was used for mass combat most of the time, failure cost survival points, success caused foe survival points. Winner of course last one standing, i.e. having more the 0 survival points when foe(s) had 0 or less.

There are random dice rollers that can be used to resolve combat as well.

The better the system the better one could of course have uneven levels, 2 1st level vs. 2nd level might then become a fair contest (Though result might be 2 characters die or defeated).

Edit above character stuff.
Gildor Inglorion switch 5 sorcerer for 5 levels of my custom class, a combo of warlock and bard that plays "Demon Lyres", basically a heavy metal electric guitar. That ok?
