Newbie Seeking Help!

Hello. I heard the community here is friendly and helpful, so I decides to sign up.

So, before I jump in, what must I know about roleplaying on these forums? I have done roleplay in other places before, so most of my questions are specific to this forum.

Must I ask before posting in a thread, and if so, how do I ask? There seems to be restrictions on the types of characters I can play. Could someone describe these restrictions more clearly please? I am unfamilar with the Forgetten Realms setting - will this hurt me?

It seems that many people here love houses and politics. Is it possible to avoid these, and if so, how?

Thank you so much!

The Role play section used to have three sections, now all blending into one.
Free Flow in which any can start and any can post to. These are the most common.
Campaigns, a member chooses to DM an adventure, other members must have permission to join and limits can be placed on what characters can be played, level limits and so on. If there is a campaign the subject will be tagged [Campaign} the first post username will be the DM.
and Arena (Tagged [Arena] )which was for practice of role play combat (some thing often the hardest thing to do in freeflow in which no set rules apply. By their nature those plays were designed to be short. Characters fight each other until one wins and other loses.

There is restrictions of only your imagination and the play need not to be about Drow, Forgotten Realms or even D&D other game worlds. A person could start a Star Wars adventure if they wished. With this however I add a caution, there might not be any other member interested in playing Star War adventure.[quote:2s0lgkak]

Well elves all Elves do have Houses, though Silver Elves appear less concerned about them then Gold or Drow elves. As to avoiding Houses you simply do not have to play in an adventure that has Houses. Politics in some ways can never be really avoided as each day on a small scale ever one does some, just to get along with others. Grand scale House against House or Nation against Nation certainly can be avoided by not playing in those adventures.

All in all, other then some common sense and the guidelines found here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=110 you can play anything you wish, just keep in mind this forum tends to have members who come because of Eilistraee and right has now few if any Star Wars fans. Some role play ideas do not get players.

Ah, thank you! I'll make a character that's vaguely in the realm of 'medieval fantasy' I suppose. And probably a human or elf who lives in the wilderness, since I have little idea of the settings of drow or other races, and I don't want to frustrate people by playing against expectations.

In which threads do you recommand I start posting? The Half-Moon Inn? Other tavern threads?

Also, unlike most people, I start with a mostly 'blank' state and add personality as I roleplay. Is this okay?

Well I would advise Cavern Tavern if you want to enter an existing thread. The other taverns have not had a post this year.

You do have the option to start a new play as well.

I've noticed that threads here do not give descriptions of their locations, or the nature of said location (Dangerous? Safe? Ominous? Calming?).

How do I figure those out?

Also, I've noticed that the Roleplaying sections seems quite... dead. No posts in the last 7 days. Is this normal? How long should I expect to wait for a reply?
