How it does seem these Menzoberranzan Drow do frequently underestimate lycanthropy, or perhaps it is lack of exposure to it and its threat. As with all lycanthropes. Tristian possessing the gift of [b:30ftz9r8]Iron Will[/b:30ftz9r8] as a racial trait, and coupled with a Druid's high will saves, the Crushing Despair is something that only gives him a second's pause, then shrugged off, he dips down to grab the severed head of the lizard he'd sworn to help, whispers a brief prayer to forgive him, then launches himself into flight, taking the fight to the unnatural spider, personally, leading his charge with an aerobatic wing-over and over-hand throw, to send that severed head slamming into the spider's back, hoping to upset its hold at least and force it to the ground, or at least dangling from a strand of webbing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vailintin is rather surprised, to see, or rather -not- see his own tactics being turned on him, but unlike they who had not been prepared for the dancing and clever Tiefling's tricks, he is quick to guess what happened, and just as quick to shift his visual perceptions. Just in time to see his body illuminate with the faerie fire. A grin flashes at the swordsman, complimenting his cleverness, but eyes shift from him to the waggling fingers of wizard, and so he turns about, and toward where he threw the Daylight Pellet, dives into the new Globe of Darkness, muting the Faerie Fire, though taking the brunt of much of that barrage of magic missiles. A fool he thinks himself then for not using it sooner, a brooch on his cloak, activated raising a [b:30ftz9r8]Shield[/b:30ftz9r8] spell about his person, granting a small armor bonus, and immunity to Magic Missiles.

[quote:30ftz9r8]A large sound, and then the gate disappears, replaced with the unmistakeable, 12 foot tall figure of a balor.

The wizard points to the group before them, "Kill them all." [/quote:30ftz9r8]

Truly sensing this before vaguely seeing it through the magical darkness, a little known truth about Vailintin's own heritage rears its ugly head in the presence of such pure evil. His voice cracking out a cut-short cry of agony, as the baatezu in his blood takes a stronger hold, physically anyway, causing those nubs of horns to grow, for skin to turn red and scaly, and most agonizing of all, he grows wings. So far from the lower planes much of his life, a Tiefling he'd always seem to be, but his Infernal ancestor being his biological mother... the truth comes out, a Half-fiend. When that pain fades away though, he remains within the Darkness globe, pulling forth a wand, one of a small few he's collected, aims it in the general direction of the wizard who had sent those missiles at him, and another Gate rips open. Vailintin being akin in alignment to the plane he summons from though, not needing alignment protection, has little trouble calling forth a fitting and evenly matched adversary for the Balor. Red, scaly, and a hateful disposition, an equally towering Pit Fiend strides forth.

Growling, his voice a touch altered, Vailintin declares, "The demon is summoned... slay the wizards, and I dedicate the souls of all I have and shall slay to you in payment." Souls, the currency and measure of power and status in the Hells, the transformed Vailintin has stricken a bargain, one that providing they come out victorious, the Pit Fiend is getting the better part of it. Thinking Vailintin the over-paying fool, the Pit-Fiend begins after the first wizard in line, and true to Pit-Fiend tactics, opens up with summoning his own entourage, with a pair of Bone Devils, along with casting Unholy Aura, and activating its Fear Aura (20-foot Radius -- DC 27 will save, or be affected as by a Fear spell, 18th caster level).

The bone devils launch into melee with the nearest wizard's nearest allies, while the 12 foot tall Pit-Fiend, casts a Power Word Stun, with the near wizard as the target (no will save). Finally, for the opening of its assault, comes a Quickened Fireball also 18th level, flung into the throng of fighters among the wizard, that it might burn as many Drow at once, as possible.

Meanwhile, back to Vailintin, he now strides forth from the darkness, bearing down on the swordsman, a wicked, sharp-toothed grin worn even as the faerie fire relights, accentuating those terrible changed features. It is a sight he is permitted to see only briefly, as yet another Darkness globe drops over him, and immediately after another behind that. Able to see in such Darkness, Vailintin's silent as death strides move into the darkness, moving near, circling around, and behind his prey, and another Half-Fiendish ability comes suddenly into play, merely touching the Drow on his shoulder, briefly, then dancing back. The touch made, and the spell-like ability, casting [b:30ftz9r8]Poison[/b:30ftz9r8] (DC20 Fortitude save to negate it, or begin taking 1d10 temporary constitution damage, each round).

Disappointed, Vail's rapier complains and protests leaving it out of the hunt, using magic instead of feeding the life of that fighter to the hungry blade.

Barvl grimaces at the sheer noise and light being generated by the battle and ducks to the side just in time to avoid a random lightning bolt. He spins toward the nearest enemy as he rises and hurls the wieghted end of the chain towards him, whipping it to the side so that it wrapped around the drow's neck, then swung around and crunched into his face with the spiked ball at the end. He jerked that one down and stabbed the side-pointing blade of his weapon into the jugular of an approaching warrior. With his left hand, he unwound the chain from the fallen drow and with his right, launched a dagger towards another approaching warrior, sticking the blade in the hollow at the bottom of the neck, where the sternum ends, severing the trachea.
Back home, we used to eat those things you call nightmares.

Leading his charge with an aerobatic wing-over and over-hand throw, to send that severed head slamming into the spider's back, hoping to upset its hold at least and force it to the ground, or at least dangling from a strand of webbing.[/color:325jc6ys]

The spider chitters as the head falls on it, several of the lizard's sharp fangs sinking into it's back making it hard to shake off, though the spider does attempt a few jerks. It is now wounded and a green ooze drips from its back. Regardless, the spider continues on its way, already on the ground and it's legs making short work of the area, to launch its own attack at the dire bat by means of skittering up a wall and somehow leaping at the dire bat, its pincers slamming together excitedly and leaking deadly poison. From behind her, the wizard raises his hands excitedly, once he realises that his previous will spell held no effect on the thing, unleashing a series of [b:325jc6ys]magic missiles[/b:325jc6ys] to keep the creature busy and distracted while his pet came up from the other side. Once the spell is finished, he slips backwards, drow style, to let the remainder of the first patrol step forward to guard him, which includes all of two drow, though neither had been touched by the fight to be an easy kill. However, they are in no hurry to step forward, despite the wizard's urging, and seem to think they stand a better chance waiting for the enemy to come to them.[/color:325jc6ys]

She jumped out of the tunnel she was in with her bow and a ready arrow in one hand, ran across the main tunnel, behind the Balor, and leap into the mini cave, using her other hand to grapple and pull herself in. She pulled back the arrow and shot strait for the base of the head, hoping it would slow the beast down a little, but knowing it wouldn't do enough to seriously harm him.

Mustering all of his strength, the aasimar manages to shove the demon's sword back, and brings Marala Vharc out wide in horizontal slash, aimed right at the demons lower chest. The demon merely jumps back a good five feet, out of range of the weapon, and casts Blasphemy upon the aasimar. [/color:325jc6ys]

An arrow whizzes past the balor's head as it jumps back from the aasimar and casts [b:325jc6ys]Blasphemy[/b:325jc6ys]. As his prey begins to slow down, he hears an annoying shriek just before the [b:325jc6ys]Chain Lightning[/b:325jc6ys] reaches him, though he is able resist the brunt of the attack. Irritated, he waves his sword hand out wide, as if to brush a gnat away, and slams his arm into the aasimar before him, a blow that would surely knock him into the tunnel wall unless the paralysis was only momentary. As his one clawed hand heads for the aasimar, he twitches the long flaming whip with the other, letting out a giant roar and snapping it back.

The whip hits the rock wall and cracks zig zag along as the tunnel shudders and more pieces of the roof fall, namely near the fey'ri that had attacked him moments ago.[/color:325jc6ys]

So far from the lower planes much of his life, a Tiefling he'd always seem to be, but his Infernal ancestor being his biological mother... the truth comes out, a Half-fiend. [/color:325jc6ys]

The balor raises its whip to strike again, this time aiming for the aasimar but holds still as a second presence becomes known to him. As aware of the presence as it is aware of him, the balor half turns to the new threat. Deciding to finish off his opponent before turning to this new enemy, he steps back and casts [b:325jc6ys]Insanity[/b:325jc6ys] on the aasimar, following through with his whip in an attempt to entangle him, aiming to finish off his first kill before moving onto the Pit Fiend. [/color:325jc6ys]

The Pit-Fiend begins after the first wizard in line, and true to Pit-Fiend tactics, opens up with summoning his own entourage, with a pair of Bone Devils, along with casting Unholy Aura, and activating its Fear Aura.[/color:325jc6ys]

Many of the drow around Vailintin are caught by the [b:325jc6ys]Fear Aura[/b:325jc6ys], and cower against the ground in fear, easy pickings for the bone devils that wade into the fight. The drow that are not affected group together and move slowly towards the bone devils, gauging the proper way to fight the things with their swords held out before them, while a few others attempt to circle behind the devils. The simple formation works well enough in theory: a volley of crossbow shots from one side to distract more than harm, followed by a melee onslaught from the other side, as well as the first side. Its success can only be told in their ability to live a little longer.

The wizard, not affected by the aura, begins casting a [b:325jc6ys]cone of cold[/b:325jc6ys] to direct at the bone devils, but he is rendered entirely useless by the Power Word Stun, unable to do anything while the battle rages on around him.

The last wizard in the group, safely watching from a distance realises that the tide is not turning in their favour. He mutters a quick prayer to his goddess under his breath and aims a [b:325jc6ys]Chain Lightning[/b:325jc6ys] in the general direction of the summoner, aiming at a drow nearby for the lightning to catch a hold of and spread, hoping that he would hit his unseen target and still pass it off as work done by the other two wizards. [/color:325jc6ys]

Vailintin's silent as death strides move into the darkness, moving near, circling around, and behind his prey, and another Half-Fiendish ability comes suddenly into play, merely touching the Drow on his shoulder, briefly, then dancing back.[/color:325jc6ys]

As soon as the globe of darkness is placed over the drow, he breathes deeply to steady himself, flowing from one position to another and ready to dart about at the slightest touch. He slowly begins walking to one side, always keeping his sword at the ready in case he should encounter someone at the other side of the globe. He holds the sword in one hand and brings out a throwing dagger. At the tiefling's touch, the drow spins around and cuts straight at that area, pushing forward even as he begins to feel the sickening effects of the [b:325jc6ys]poison[/b:325jc6ys] on him. He tosses the dagger in the general direction, although his aim is greatly hampered by his inability to see and, as of now, stand straight. A wave of nausea tilts his world, and he stumbles blindly in one direction, waving his sword around in front of him.[/color:325jc6ys]

Kathryn sprints underneath Tristian as he flies at the wizard, thinking that the distracted wizard should prove less of a problem dead, though the two drow would have to suffice. She strikes the drow on the left with her whip first, the snakes diving in to tear tiny holes and drip paralyzing venom into the drow. As he begins to stiffen, she ducks underneath a swing from the second drow, dodging under the blade to come up behind him and slam her free fist in the middle of his back, the snakes on her whip rising upwards and aiming for the second drow's neck.

How painfully short-lived the work of those few fighters to remain standing against the Fear Aura is, when those who are left cowering on the ground are being ripped apart in horrifically sadistic fashion, too afraid to fight back, by the claws and bony wyvern-like tails of the Bone Devils, where else is better for this Pit Fiend to launch his subsequent Fireball, following the Power Word Stun, than right into the midst of these few who manage to keep their wits about them? Once that fiery explosion is set off in their midst into battle goes the Pit Fiend, marching up directly behind the Balor which seems to have mistaken it for an ally. Ignored, the Pit Fiend captures that flaming whip on its next back stroke, and steps in close, to wrap it around the Balor's neck, plant a large scaly foot against its back and begin pulling on the whip at either end, while pushing away with that foot, growling in Abyssal so that as he chokes the Balor with its own weapon, it may hear and understand, [i:1v1nxd0j]"Be sure to tell your masters how you lost because of your lack of discipline and awareness on the field of battle, little puss-mongering skull-lover!"[/color:1v1nxd0j][/i:1v1nxd0j]

For an Aasimar Paladin, there surely must be nothing quite like watching a little fragment of the bitter conflict of the Blood Wars spill over right before his eyes, and even play a part in helping him battle a Balor. Perhaps he may even find himself glad to see a Pit Fiend, for a change...?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back to Vailintin we go however, seeing fine in magical darkness for the moment, watching this Master Swordsman grow weak, nauseated, and perhaps even dizzy. The dagger, much to Vailintin's surprise, and displeasure, manages to securely lodge itself in the arm-like portion of one of his wings. With a growl he tugs it out and tosses it aside, moving back in with patience as he gauges his opponent's state of disorientation, comes in to perform a nice little Coup De Grace, driving his hungry rapier in deep, and relishing in the transference of vital life energy as the insidious blade vampirically drains its victim of his blood. Not only does this serve to heal all of Vailintin's wounds, but also give him a boost of energy, as if he were freshly joining the battle. When finally he strides out of the darkness, he witnesses the Bone Devils take a hit of Chain Lightning and continue their assigned slaughter despite the damage. To his belt a hand darts, and comes back up, launching a bag of choking powder at this last remaining wizard, before throwing a volley of throwing daggers at him. With any luck, the crafty rogue hopes to hit some vital areas, or perhaps even pierce a hand... it would be funny seeing a wizard try to waggle his fingers with all those severed tendons. Funny, and a little sad.

Under his breath, proudly Vailintin queries, "Do you see me mother? What think you[b:1v1nxd0j] now[/b:1v1nxd0j] of your half-blood boy?[/color:1v1nxd0j]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Tristian's front, the matter of this nuisance of a spider, is a thing more easily reacted to, simply when he sees that the throw has not stopped the spider in its tracks, and when it rushes for that wall, Tristian does the smartest thing possible, flies further away from that wall, and while he's at it, communing with his feral brethren, in their high-frequency language, merely little more than chirps to less attuned ears. Even as the spider launches its leap, does it find itself halted mid-air, legs grappled by a dire bat at either side, and holding those legs out-stretched, flying up to great heights, in an attempt to hold it immobile, skewer it on a stalagtite, and leave it there. Alas, this leaves Tristian to suffer the inescapable barrage of magic missiles, sending spasms of pain through his body, sending him into a clumsy crash-landing, which he knows well enough, to wrap his wings around his body snugly during, granting a small chance he'll survive the fall without breaking anything. How fortunate, his guide from Menzo is there to give the caster responsible a lethal dose of venom, else he might've found himself prone to additional attacks otherwise.

Veraka slams into the tunnel wall behind him, his head snapping back and impacting the hard rock with near bone-crunching force. He slumped to the ground, and didn't budge for a several long seconds.

=================

Neriah had just enough time to gather her senses about her, and leap into the air, away from the rocks that came pounding down around her. She saw a glint of platinum outta the corner of her eye, and turned her head in time to see her husband and future father of her children, slam into one of the many stone walls around them and slump to the ground, motionless.
"VERAKA!!" She screamed at the top of her lungs, flying over to him with all haste, though the falling rocks from the ceiling made that task incredibly difficult.

================

With a grunt, Veraka opens his eyes to the welcoming darkness of his helmet, then finding the visored part of his helm, he slowly starts to register the cacophony of battle that is raging on around him. Soon, however, his ears caught wind of sound that he was familiar with; the voice of Neriah, crying out to him, asking if he was okay, and all. Suddenly, his eyes snapped open as he remembered what had thrown him. Summoning all the power his celestial blood had to offer, the aasimar called down the [i:2xnvbmxf]Divine Might[/i:2xnvbmxf] of his deity, Bahamut. His eyes became fully enveloped in silver aura as he let out an audible growl, pushing himself up and off the ground. Though he was still shaking off the effects of the smashing close up he'd had with that rock wall, divine-granted strength flowed into him from the heavens above, casting the weariness from his bones. With an effort, he rose to his full height, full silver orbs of fury glowing beneath his helm. Lighting crackled up and down the blade of Marala Vharc, as Veraka called upon twin [i:2xnvbmxf]Arcs of Lighting[/i:2xnvbmxf] to start charging up his sword with crackling hate.
With his strength renewed, the aasimar grasped his sword with both hands and hurled himself at the Balor before him, even as the Bone Devil was doing it's deviant work from behind. When the paladin was no more than a couple of meters away, he leapt at the infernal beast, Marala Vharc over his helm.

With a roar of anger and defiance, Veraka brought his sword down over his head across the Balor in a veritcal motion. At the point of contact, Marala Vharc discharged its pent up electrical charge, white bolts of super heated fury dancing down the length of the blade and onto the balor's skin. Right as he finished his two-handed strike, the aasimar planted an armored foot into the ground and vaulted backwards a meter; as he landed, he summoned holy energy deep from within him, and cast [i:2xnvbmxf]Holy Smite[/i:2xnvbmxf] right then.

Ignored, the Pit Fiend captures that flaming whip on its next back stroke, and steps in close, to wrap it around the Balor's neck, plant a large scaly foot against its back and begin pulling on the whip at either end, while pushing away with that foot, growling in Abyssal so that as he chokes the Balor with its own weapon, it may hear and understand, "Be sure to tell your masters how you lost because of your lack of discipline and awareness on the field of battle, little puss-mongering skull-lover!"[/color:dqp3knvh]

The balor steps forward to attack the aasimar, but finds his movement hindered as the whip is snatched from him and he is attacked from behind. Unable to twist and grab the pit fiend because of the foot on his back, the balor does the next best thing, grasping the hilt of his sword with both free hands so that the tip of the blade points at the ceiling. He leans back toward the fiend while bending with the pull of the whip, and, quick as lightning, thrusts the sword over his head and straight back at the pit fiend, using the closeness of the pit fiend to his advantage instead of trying to free himself.

While this does save the balor from being cleaved in half by the aasimar, the sword still scores quite a major hit on its leg, and, coupled with the lightning, weakens it considerably. Thinking quickly, the balor casts a [b:dqp3knvh]Fire Storm[/b:dqp3knvh] at Neriah to hold the aasimar's attention for a few moments just before the holy smite hits it. Suddenly blind it stumbles around, unfurling its wings and taking to the air to escape any attacks at such a vulnerable state, but, limited by the low ceiling, comes back down with a jarring impact, its vision clearing up now. In a final effort, the balor waves a clawed appendage, pushing away his opponents and against the wall with a magical thrust if he is successful. Though the balor would certainly dispute it, it is obvious that it can do nothing by way of moving.

It attempts to stand slowly, which the balor can barely do with one leg hanging by a torn mess of tendons and tissue. Unable to contain itself and knowing that now is probably its best chance, the Balor's instinct takes the moment of confusion to launch itself at the pit fiend, using his one good leg to push off of and a flap of his wings to keep the momentum going just enough that when he barrels into the pit fiend, he does so with as much force he can gather. His glowing sword trails a path in the air as the balor raises it behind him then brings it swinging down so that it will meet the fiend the second he does. [/color:dqp3knvh]

To his belt a hand darts, and comes back up, launching a bag of choking powder at this last remaining wizard, before throwing a volley of throwing daggers at him. With any luck, the crafty rogue hopes to hit some vital areas, or perhaps even pierce a hand...[/color:dqp3knvh]

As the exsanguinated drow crumples to the floor, Vailintin has much more luck with the wizard, whom, doubled up as he tries to brush away the gas, loses a few fingers to one knife and the functionality of his other hand as it bites in just above his wrist. Just as the effects of the gas take over and the wizard begins to cough, however, the final dagger flies through the cloud and the unfortunate drow is nailed in his left eye just as the first bout of coughing hits him. He keels over backwards, the rasping in his throat dying with him, just as the other wizard is cut in two by a bone devil in the midst of fleeing. [/color:dqp3knvh]

Kathryn manages to evade most of the final barrage of missiles from the wizard, catching a few in her side, but since her snakes are close enough to latch on without any movement from her, she does not need to shift at all. She slowly crouches just as the paralysed wizard follows her to the ground and shudders at the pain, gritting her teeth and trying to stop convulsing enough to yank the dagger from the dead drow in front of her and stab the wizard. Finally steady after a few moments, she neatly cuts the wizard's throat, then lifts her head to survey the rest of the area, the hand holding the dagger flying up before her in case something was still there.
