Neverwinter - Announced

Post by Shir'le E. Illios »

A new game in development called "Neverwinter" (as far as I can tell that's the actual name) has been announced. It's [i:3pj1zws5]not[/i:3pj1zws5] Neverwinter Nights 3 and it's also not an MMO. Instead it's, apparently, a "cooperative online RPG". Despite it not being an RPG it's being developed by Cryptic (who made Champions Online and Star Trek Online).

GameSpot has an interview with Jack Emmert[/url:3pj1zws5] about the game. Here's an excerpt:

[quote:3pj1zws5][b:3pj1zws5]GameSpot:[/b:3pj1zws5] Give us an overview of Neverwinter. What is the game and how will people play it? Will it be a full-on massively multiplayer online role-playing game, like City of Heroes or Champions Online?

[b:3pj1zws5]Jack Emmert:[/b:3pj1zws5] I wouldn't say MMORPG at all--Neverwinter is a cooperative RPG. You can play with a bunch of friends and experience Neverwinter and D&D in a brand-new way. We're trying to create new sorts of games that we call "OMGs" (online multiplayer games).

In terms of Neverwinter itself, players will find it's a brand-new Forgotten Realms. Years and years have passed, and Neverwinter has fallen into ruins. A brave few are trying to eke out their lives and to rebuild the once great metropolis, but many threats stand in the way. And this is where the players come in…[/quote:3pj1zws5]
As you can see from the interview it's using D&D 4E, it's set "a little over 100 years into the future" (no word on the future compared to what, but for the moment I'm assuming the future since NWN2 because it mentions recovering from the Spellplague). There will be five classes you can choose from to play (the staple fighter, wizard, rogue, ranger and cleric) and for races humans, elves, and dwarves "as well as a few special ones that I won't mention just now".

The game will also come with a system currently named "Forge" to allow players to build their own adventures. But from the description it doesn't sound like it'll be nearly as deep as the Neverwinter Nights toolset(s) as you'll (just?) be able to "write adventures, to create maps, and to attach their quests to in-game entrances and NPCs". It's sounding altogether a lot like City of Heroes' Mission Architect; build a simple map, write some story, hook to existing online game world and have some hack-n-slash. Again, to me sounds like it's totally missing the point of what made Neverwinter Nights so compelling.

There is more on the game in the interview[/url:3pj1zws5]. The game is set to release fourth quarter of 2011. There's also an official website[/url:3pj1zws5](without much content at the moment).

I hear "cooperative online RPG" and I think games like Diablo. I'm totally cool with that.

The fourth race will probably be dragonkin or tiefling or something. At any rate, I don't fancy D&D 4ed in any way, online computer gaming included.

Wouldn't it be funny if this game completely flops due to gamers saying to themselves exactly what Argoth just said? That'll show WoTC. Muah ah ah ah ah.

It would be funny, but I don't really expect that to happen. Most game players aren't that discriminate (which kind of makes sense; as long as a game is fun does it really matter what 'rules' it uses?). It's more likely to fail due to Cryptic developing it (who have lost a [i:2z2lvmbo]lot[/i:2z2lvmbo] of faith with game players due to how relatively poor Champions Online and Star Trek Online turned out).

Personally I'm trying to reserve judgment until I know more about it. But it'll have to be a pretty damn good game for me to break my boycott of WotC products over it. Even if it would be really, really tempting if they'll allow you to play a drow (which, based on Champions Online's character customization system might be very possible even if it's just a "black skinned elf").

Anyway, here's another interview[/url:2z2lvmbo] at TenTonHammer as well as an interview article[/url:2z2lvmbo] and first thoughts article[/url:2z2lvmbo] at MMORPG.

So they took D&D and dumbed it down (4e), and now they're taking 4e and dumbing it down further? 4th edition was made for computers. How can they water it down further?

Oh and to how much more of a nerfed D&D can get, well, what I can think of makes me shudder.

I will reserve judgment until i get this game.

As much as sad as i am by saying it, ill take everything with 'Neverwinter' in it's name. And, since i read Gauntlegrym, which is part of the NEVERWINTER trilogy, i pretty much know what happened to neverwinter, why it's ruined and what possible enemies one will face.

Another reason why i will get this game no matter what, is the slim chance that one might be able to meet Drizzt Do'Urden in this game! Just a slim hope.

If the game will be good, i will not complain. Too bad there arent a lot of races to choose from (I Expect the other two to be Dragonborn and Tieflings. Tieflings i am 100% sure of) and not that many classes that we know of yet but it doesnt matter. As long as it will be playable and ill manage to get fun out of it, i wont complain, as i already said.

I havent played Champions online or STO, but i honestly hope they wont fuck up Neverwinter. If they will, i will never forgive them.

From what I can tell of the 4th Ed rule books a computer game of it would probably be okay. My biggest problem is that 4th Ed really no longer felt like D&D to me anymore.

In other news, it would appear that www.playneverwinter.com[/url:angyd6gf] has been updated if anyone is interested. Some of the screen shots seem to suggest that the drow will at least make an appearance.

When will this be available? I would like to look at it as a free to play first before putting any money toward it.
