On The Shores of Despair (Part 3)

Post by veraka »

((Alright, we've really skimmed the edges for the 20th page, so here's Part 3 :D ))

Veraka looked to Cinder as she posed her question to him. He turned to her "Well, it depends on couple things prior to getting there; one, if we encounter anymore fools like those stone heads a back ways; and two if the weather keeps its howling down for a time."

He took note of Cinder's staring at Adian; though he was curious, what in blue blazes was she looking at?

The aasimar followed Cinder outside the gates of the outpost, and looked up to the owl. Upon hearing that there was a winter wolf out in the woods, his eyes lit up.

"She might be out there, Aurora might be alive; even if it's possible, please ask your feathery flying friend to please hurry. I have to know."

" Try and be patient Vetake I know you miss your Aurora, my feathered friend knows how you are feeling and she will find the healers home as quickly as possible, be comforted that if this is her and i am quite sure she is she is in good hands." Cinder said trying to give comfort to her worried friend.

Wrapping her clock around herself tightly she started back toward the gate " it won't be long now you will have Aurora safe in your good care, now lets see it we can get back in without to much trouble. "

Biot awoke to the sound of shouting. He rushed outside to see the guards standing on the wall arrows pointing to someone outside the outpost. He rushed to the top of the wall to see his 2 friends Cinder and Veraka standing there.

"What have they done?" Biot asked the guards.

"We found them secretly trying sneak back into the outpost. Why would they be doing that? Have they gone to notify others of the inner workings of our outpost!?!" The guard said as they restrained Biot and gave the order to go get the rest of the group.

" So much for no trouble " Cinder said under her breath.

" Fortunately i pick these winter greens i found back there i hate having to explain this kind of thing to numb minded people although the captain may understand." Cinder shielded them as best she could from the arrows with a spell that slowed the them, there was only 3 guardsmen so it was not to great a task if she concentrated hard enough. She hoped that Padw remembered that she had mentioned she hoped she came across them, there was a full moon and it was the best time to pick them.

Adian was at his cot meditating when the guards came for him. He barely had time to open his eyes before one of them grabbed his arm and yanked him to his feet. His eyes snapped open and he planted his feet and resisted with surprising force.

"What is happening?" he demanded.

"Come with us, now!" the guard barked, drawing a short blade on him.

Adian considered his options quickly, and none of them looked very good. Reluctantly he relaxed his stance and raised his hands.

He was roughly shoved towards teh door, wondering what in the hells had gone wrong.

Veraka looked up to see bows aimed down at him and to Biot being rounded up. He knew that the situation was deteriorating fast, and diplomacy being not of his strong suits he decided to result to his upbringing.

"If me and my friend here were wanting to bring your pathetic outpost to it's knee's, I wouldn't need to go and alert others as to what is in your outpost I'd just need to do this. . . ." Veraka unsheathed Marala Vharc and roared, holding his sword up to the heavens. Electricity danced up the blades length.

Bolt after bolt of super-charged lighting crackled down from the sky, landing around him and Cinder, though not hitting any living creature. The demonstration lasted a few seconds; but when it was finished, Veraka could tell that he'd hit home with the fools; intimidation had its uses occasionally.

"Now open up this excuse for a gate and take all of us to your commander, or I'll bring down fury the likes you've never seen, nor live to tell about," the aasimar growled to the guard at the gates; the entrance opened.

Veraka had come within inches to seeing his winter wolf friend; a bunch of gung-ho guards with their stereotypical prejudices weren't going to stop him now.
"Bring me to your commander," he thundered to the guard as he entered the outpost.

He'd told Adian that if any of these assholes did something stupid, he'd personally give them a reason not to. Veraka was a thread away from doing just that, but he held his patience waiting to see if the commander would be as reasonable as he'd first been, or if he too would need a reconsideration effort.

As Adian was escorted out of the guest barrack, the sky was suddenly cracked and nearly broken by the explosions of lightning and thunder, the light and sound almost overwhelming his sensitive eyes and ears...and he hadn't even been in direct sight of the explosions. The men around him were stunned into silence as Adian tried to rattle his senses back into working order.

Veraka had gotten everyone's attention all right...it was anyopne's guess whetehr it would lead to reason or violence.

Adain broke from his captors and ran for the stairs to the wall. He had to stop this before someone panicked and everything went to blazes.

Cinder impulse reacted instantly and she jumped about 2 feet into the air which was quite a sight since she was just over 4 and a half feet herself she was after all quite light on her feet.
" Vertake please warn me the next time you decide to pull the sky down on top us, it's a bit hard on the nerves " she insisted finding her feet.

((I'm back, hope I didn;t miss too much!))

Lyon and Frad had been all but ignored in their entry, their weapons dismissed since they were obviously not Drow. Pwdn had passed easily too, once she'd laid both her winter cloak and her robes - all that she was wearing underneath - upon the check-point they had been all too eager to let her pass. She had not given them the rings and holy symbols, however, those remained hidden beneath a temporarily opaque skin.

The later shouting woke her from where she had been resting, thinking about the journey so far, and she arrived just as Veraka called the sky down around himself upon being denied entry. She moved towards him as he reached the gate and laid a hand on his breastplate, to stop him just a moment as she made her point. "Veraka, please. They mean no harm, they're camped here on the shores of manifest evil and by your own admission you know full well how the evil Drow operate. These men are scared and with good reason; please won't you be patient with them, for all our sakes?"

Lyon was absent, there was a weaponsmith here of some ability and he had gone to ask about the suitability of different materials for enchanted equipment. Frad was in the kitchens arguing with the cook about the best methods for making sweet dishes, specifically the worth of honey as opposed to sugar. They were both using language that would make an orc blush to hear it.

The aasimar looked to Cinder as she politely asked him her request.

"I am sorry for that, I didn't mean to startle you; but these idiots had it coming to them, and my patience is wearing dangerously thin right now," he growled, making sure that the guards heard him; "next time I will make note to let you know that I intend to bring the heavens down." He winked at her.

Upon feeling a gentle touch on the chest-plate, he turned to see Pwdn was standing in front of him. Upon hearing her request, he nodded grudgingly.

"To right they are to be scared of drow that they come across, or any other creature out there; but does that mean that I have to sit back and watch them make a mockery of my friends, and potentially harm them. No. I understand your desire to see this mission through with as little bloodshed as possible, and I wish it as well. However, Lady Pwdn, please understand this of me as well. I am a paladin of the Dark Maiden, and Storm Warrior(Divine Crusader with storm domain) of the Dragon-Father. I am well aware of my duties to uphold the laws of the land and to be repay rudeness with kindness, as the Dark Maiden instructs. However, I also will not standby and [i:1vva0req]let[/i:1vva0req] something happen to my friends, be them drow, elf, or even half-orc for that matter," he fumed, hopping Pwdn would simply let him vent his steam.

"As a paladin, I am obligated to see both sides of a situation, and thanks to you, I now have; but also as a paladin, I am taught to not stand by and let the innocent or just take a mockery for something they didn't do; and as a Storm Warrior of Bahamut, I am also sworn to uphold the honor, and dignity of my friends, who willing accepted me for who I am and even offered to and are helping me find my friend, Aurora. Under Bahamut, I am sworn to see justice for both sides, and while the men of this outpost have legitimate reason to suspect us of something, that does NOT mean that they have the right nor privilege to hold ANY of us accountable for simply wondering into the forest. THAT is why I stand by my actions; I can not and WILL not stand idly by when [b:1vva0req]anyone[/b:1vva0req] threatens me, my kin, or my friends, not when I know I can do something about it, whether that action be violent or not. I don't like saying this, Pwdn, but I learned a long time ago that violence has its place in education, much to my discontent, and I learned that lesson very well," he breathed out remembering that hate filled lessons when he was but a young lad.

"However, Pwdn, I will, at this moment in time, abide by your request and see if the commander is more opened minded than his troops."

(((Nice to have you back Pwdn)))

" I was simply getting some winter greens it is a full moon and they are much more rich when picked at this time. I am a druid and I need to keep my bundles well stocked. Perhaps I should have discussed it with you at dinner but your stories were so interesting it slipped my mind." Cinder explain apologetically.

Veraka looked to Cinder and chuckled; "Cinder, don't worry about it, oh and glad to hear that my stories were intriguing to at least someone," he said with a smile.

"Anyways, what's done is done, and I believe, and hope, that the guards will be a little more opened minded from here on in. As much as I don't want to be an ass, but I'm sticking well to my promise to Adian." With that he continued in to the camp.

A guard came running up to him; "halt; you have demonstrated your power to us, but we have our orders. . . "

"Issued or protocol?" Veraka interrupted, knowing himself what military life was like.

"Protocol, but that requires us to arr. ." he was again stopped when the aasimar raised his hand, silencing the guard.

"Yes, protocol requires you to arrest me and my compatriots; but it also requires you to take me to your commander upon request, which is exactly what I'm asking at the moment. My request also takes precedence, given the face that it is the commander who has final say as to what happens. 'That' is protocol, and should you break it, you, as well as I, know what the punishment is for insubordination."

The guard was drop-jaw for a second, but then regained his composure and took the Veraka, Cinder and the others to commander's quarters.

Adian had managed to defuse some of the wilder tempers on the wall above, and came down peacefully with them, once again resigning himself to arrest. Adian quickly joined the group on the way to the commander's quarters.

"I imagine he'll be going slightly crazy about now," Adian said. "This is not going to be one of his more pleasant days.

To describe the commander as "slightly crazy" was an exaggeration: He was furious but it was a controlled fury.

"I am waiting for an explanation," he said...both to Veraka and the sergeant of the wall.

"You wish an explanation, sir; then by Bahamut himself, I'll give you one. I take a strolle out in woods with my friend here, Cinder," he gestures toward the druidess, "she is assisting me with helping to locate a friend of mine who is lost out in [b:1c1m9dsv]those[/b:1c1m9dsv] woods," he pointed out toward the gates and woods beyond them; "we're out for barely five minutes, and the next thing I know is that all my comrads are being rounded up and for what? Because your men think that Cinder or I or any of us are giving away information about your base camp. We've all already demonstrated that we are willing to abide by your rules, but I'm not sure if being arrested out of suspicion is among those rules."
Veraka looked to the sergeant, then back at the commander; "and I've already demonstrated that if I or any of my compatriots here wanted to level this compound, which Pyoro(spelling?) has already indicated that we're not here for such action, then it would not take much to do so," he indicated the lighting blast marks outside the gates.

"Oh, and commander, before you decide to make a haste judgement, remember one thing, both deities whom I serve do not look kindly upon the unjust and unfair treatment of strangers, and neither do I."

He looked to the Sergeant; "well, sir, the armored one has the straight of it. We thought they were selling us out to someone unknown and out there."
