Founding a Facade

Post by Pheurazath »

The past 26 years, had been a time of great and difficult trials, from the first clumsy strides from her mother's nest, to the nearly independent development almost all chromatic dragons, and for that matter, dwellers of the Underdark wilderness, experienced. Some would survive, some would falter along the way, and never see the budding of their own maturity. For her, it had been worth the living, having had only a brief mentor who soon faced his own Twilight, and left her the legacy of searching for a fabled vault of ancient draconic magic buried deep in the bowels of the world, lost since the world was very young, and the Underdark's terrain had yet to become subterranean.

Fully intending to find this vault, she has found herself, wanting for a more meaningful existence, than to meet her own Twilight, a tired old wyrm, in search of a treasure that might not exist, or perhaps has already been found. Of all the races in the Underdark, she has been fondest of mimicing in form, is the graceful Drow, graceful, slender, and agile, like herself, so unlike the sverfnebli, and the 'gravelly-voiced' duergar. And who better to have valuable resources to guide her search than the ever power-hungry Drow, or so she has thought. Yes, to become one of them, to blend into their society and be viewed as kin to their untrained eyes. Realizing the fault in this ploy, that she knows little to nothing of how she is expected to behave, or know, she came to the conclusion, a smaller settlement would be safest. True, though it wouldn't be as easy to vanish into, there would be fewer enemies to fend off, if she were discovered, and her life endangered for it.

Now, the unfortunate thing is of all her spying on Drow women, the only ones bold enough to venture into wilds as Phe called home, it was the priestesses of Lolth, and so, sporting the visage of a flawlessly beautiful young Drow maiden, in semi-revealing and sensuous attire, fashioned similarly without the emblem of Lolth, however, Pheurazath... no, Kalkyril, with a prepared story and readiness to improvise, standing by, ventures from the shadows and wilds she has called home, doing well to act as a lone, unescorted, and vulnerable drow would, feigning the tension and anxiety of one who is ever alert for monsters or gods know what else, around the next stalagmite mound. From the shadows, and into the dim lights of the walls and gate so common to Underdark settlements, built high and fortified to keep the many dangers in the wilds, outside. Here, the young juvenile dragoness, feigning to be a young juvenile Drow, hopes to find shelter, and hopefully acceptance of her false identity.

(OOC Post: Some have brought to my attention, that the location setting in this opening is very vague. Due to lack of knowledge of specific locations, and/or lack of maps to view, I have up to this point left it to chance what location this begins with. At the mercy of other players, that is if someone has a mind to make that decision, otherwise please message me with websites with viewable maps of the Underdark.)

Years. It had been so long since he had returned to the Underdark, but yet again, the battle-wary storm warrior, and his great winter wolf companion yet again ventured into the merciless depths of the Underdark to speak to an old acquaintance of their's in Lith My'athar.

"Gods, how long has it been since we first came down here?" the warrior asked his wolf.
[i:2k1foivi]Longer than I would like to remember[/i:2k1foivi] she replied telepathically to hm. The aasimar Veraka and the winter wolf Aurora stuck out like a sore thumb in the eternal darkness that surrounded them both; sheathed in his platinum dragon-scale plate, Veraka glistened with any light that touched him, and Aurora, with her white fur, shown off like a candle among the darkness. Both of them continued onward, wary of what had happened the last time they'd been down here.

Pheurazath had never seen an Aasimar, much less a paladin, in those past years of maturing from hatchling, and venturing across the vast Underdark for sake of survival in its wilds, even into the less charted Utterdark, not even the wise and aged mentor of her kind, had prepared her for this alien sight, and yet, despite the sudden terror of uncertainty, how to deal with this seemingly glowing pair, she knew revealing her true form now, might well ruin any future chances of making this false identity work.

The terror soon replaced by confidence, remembering, despite the danger this could pose to her plans, she IS a dragon behind her humanoid shape change, and with that confidence to support her, she turns to confront the pair, demonstrating all the haughty confidence she has witnessed in Lolth priestesses. "[i:26oqijmo]Colnbluth[/i:26oqijmo]", she snaps at the strange male and his wolf, "What manner of creature are you?!"

Hearing the sudden sharp voice, the aasimar unsheathed his sword, Marala Vharc and had his shield raised in a battle position by the time he found the source of the voice. A Lolthian priestess had stepped out to confront the both of them.
Aurora issued a low growl at the priestess, while Veraka felt his darkness start to come up from within him. Had the priestess actually attacked them both, he would've unleashed it upon the drow, but she hadn't which naturally drew his curiosity. Having had more than his fill of encounters with drow before, Veraka wasn't about to start a needless engagement unless necessary.

"Peace, my friend," he said to his wolf companion, then turning to the new arrival; "what creature am I? Simple, I'm an aasimar, not that you'd care for it, but that's what I am," he retorted, staring down the priestess with his radiant silver glowing eyes from beneath his helm.

For a fleeting moment, there is confusion in her eyes, both at the reaction, and the racial name, neither making sense. Unheard of things to Deep Dragons, at least when speaking of things to expect in the inhospitable Underdark. Without letting the facade falter however, she resorts to a different approach, remembering her prepared false history. Showing herself unarmed, not even the snake-headed whips common to her apparent station, she questions, "What makes you believe you have any notion of what is to my liking? You are not from here, that is obvious! So unless you've been hired to kill me you can put your pig-sticker away!"

Seeing that she meant no threat, and that her aura wasn't one of malice, Veraka lowered his weapon, reversed his grip on it and with a clang, sit it blade down, in front of him.
"What is to your liking and not is for you to know; as to your statement that I'm not from here you're correct in that statement, I am not. Very astute observation." He paused a moment, looking over her as if studying her for a moment; then finally he said "you wear the attire that denotes you as a priestess of the Spider Queen, yet you fail to carry their most prized weapon; I fail to see how you are a priestess, unless you killed a priestess and are impersonating them."

Outright laughter, a bit shrill is the initial answer, then her expression and tone turns grim and serious, half-hoping this one cannot extract truth from her by some magical means, as she lies, without missing a beat, for it is a rehearsed, and practiced deception, rehearsed so many times she nearly convinced herself of it, "Not quite... I have been deprived of my weapon during an attack on my house. Knowing not the identity of my enemies, I am..." and to this point, she sneers in disgust with the confession, "... on the run, and apparently, out of favor with Lolth. "

The aasimar regarded the priestess with a quizzing glance. "The all to common way of hierarchy within drow society, so I'm not surprised, at that part. However," he pauses, "two things don't add up here, which makes me wander. . . "

Now fearing that this unknown male might be a threat to her deception, a deception founded in a desire to avoid the expected stereotypes and (in her opinion) entirely unwarranted anxiety, of a dragon entering the nearby city, she issues a harsh venomous glare through narrowed eyes, and a growl hints her voice. Fists curl into tight balls, tempted to back-hand him, tempted, except that he is armed, and accompanied, and so far, there is no proof that she's aware of, that she is not who or what she claims.

Ire boiling over at the cryptic, trailing statement, "Speak! What are these two things?! I tire of these questions, and am already weary of traveling."

His eyes raising to the outburst, Veraka kept his cool, knowing all to well that drow, especially priestesses, were subject to this kinda temperament.
He answered in a flat tone, "well, one, if you say that you've fallen out of favor with the Spider Queen, which would probably explain your houses fall, then how did you survive when it did fall, and second, how are you still alive, given the fact that almost all the time the attacking house will go to extraordinary lengths to ensure that no noble born survives, unless of course you're not a noble born, then it is just my second thought that matters."

Seeing the reaction of the priestess, the great winter wolf arched her back, but didn't growl, making sure that her warning was well founded, but a wave from Veraka's hand settled the matter with her.

"Speak! What are these two things?! I tire of these questions, and am already weary of traveling," snapped the irate drow priestess.

The Asimar answered in a flat tone, [i:2mlunqd1]"Well, one, if you say that you've fallen out of favor with the Spider Queen, which would probably explain your houses fall, then how did you survive when it did fall, and second, how are you still alive, given the fact that almost all the time the attacking house will go to extraordinary lengths to ensure that no noble born survives, unless of course you're not a noble born, then it is just my second thought that matters."[/i:2mlunqd1]

Just as Pheurazath was about to retort with further terse words to the handsome Asimar, she suddenly paused and looked to her left at a space in the air that began to radiate with a blue luminous energy. An instant later the sound of harsh crackling power and the metalic tang of ozone filled the air as the energy field grew and shards of electricity danced about the place. Both Veraka and Pheurazath felt their hair begin to rise as the atmosphere around filled with the glowing energy.

Then a doorway 8 foot high by four foot wide suddenly appeared in front of the bewildered onlookers. A small gnomish figure dove through the doorway, her colourful glittering robes and hair smoking with tiny embers burning on her. Beyond the event horizon of the portal, the onlookers could just dimly see a raging battle in flung swing. Close to the doorway was knight in blood splattered golden armour cleaving his way through a multitude of savage looking Orogs. He looked as though he was performing a reargurd action and was being sorely pressed by the horde of Orogs that would swarm towards him only to be scythed down by his glowing blue longsword.

“Come on if ya think ya hard enough you BASTARDS!” he screamed in ferocious glee as he hacked down another two Orogs that had tried to lunge at him with their wicked looking lances.

The gnome on the floor got to her feet and yell at the knight,

“Get yer shiney arse back her Talwyn! NOW! I can’t hold the portal any longer!”

With the briefest of nods in acknowledgement, the embattled paladin reversed the grip on his glowing blue longsword and bashed the pommel into the face of the nearest Orog that was trying to grapple with him and with a backward leap, he hurled himself through the collapsing portal, crashing to the floor with a clatter of metal as the gnome made a series of passes and signs with her hands as she mumbled the final words to her incantation.

There was a massive implosion of air that rocked everyone nearby as the portal imploded.

Stunned silence filled the air….

(OOC: First of all, Talwyn, welcome to the RP, love the sizable post, however PLEASE, don't write for others, their reactions to particular events. I'm sure, as much as I Veraka, would appreciate the opportunity to play our own respective characters on our own. That in mind, I will try to incorporate your post into the RP, with my own modifications to Pheurazath's reactions, but I ask you to henceforth respect other players, with my request.)

IC:

A delighted grin replaces the grim snarl, proud of her next declaration, and seeing a plausible escape from her own web of lies that began to appear about to collapse into a tangled mess, "I had begun to suspect when the Spider Queen no longer supported us, that such an attack would inevitably be imminent, and thus retreated to a personal secret hide-out, utilizing a small entourage of kobold slaves to keep me informed of events within the city..." there's more to the tale, but her voice trails off, the disguised Deep Dragon first sensing the build-up of magic, and almost seeming to anticipate the resulting flash, has her arm up to shield her eyes a mere fraction of a second early.

To truly Drow eyes, the radiance would truly sting, and the hiss escaping her mouth could be justified, despite its truth as a mannerism as a dragon, expressing her annoyance at another otherworldly disturbance. How she yearns to be on the OTHER side of these nearby city walls, putting them between herself and the dangerous Underdark wilderness. With an arm up and shielding her eyes, one might not even notice how the sudden light doesn't actually daze her, as it ought.

Seeing the searing energetic portal form, the aasimar raised his shield to block whatever came out of gateway. However when a human paladin came forth, he was stunned.
"What in the Nine Hells. . . ?" he asked startled at the idea of another paladin in the Underdark of all places.

Shaking from the imploding portal, Veraka braced himself as the ground shook beneath his feet. Shaking himself from the original shock, he recovered.
"What the bloody hell. . . "
