"Bah, I suppose we must procede apace for the next safe house, or else we shall never reach the Promenade," he turned to Calia, "Can you reassemble your weapon on the move? I could loan you my carpet, if you require a smoother ride?"

Calia looked at Zazzt. "My bow will do for now, I have a limited supply of the ammunition for the weapon in my pack and no way to easily resupply it here. Beside arrows I can make or buy here and my sword and dagger don't need to be reloaded." She smiled then.

Nedylene smirked at the banter between the alien Drow female warrior and the native Drow mage. Then she looked at Adian. "My young Drow paladin, we shall go to the Promenade and make stops at all safe houses and shrines on the way. However after I meet with Qilue' I will need to go to a ruin just past Yartar on the Yartar to Everlund road. My family had a holding there long ago and I want to pay respects to my mother. She died defending our keep there from my great aunt and her daughter also named Qilue'. Only Qilue' Vrinn is as ruthless as any of Lolth's Yathrin and now the Ilharess of the Menzoberranzan branch of House Vrinn. The existance of the Underdark branch of my house is why when I restored it I also renamed it for my now late human step-father."

Nedylene looked off distantly toward Vrinn Ser and the ruins of Morn's Forge far to the northeast and beyond to Nec'perya d'l'Drathir her ancestral home in the caldera of an extinct ancient volcano. "Besides Lunar Temple on Elben Aator my family holds through my half-Sister Sabine Rahn the Eilistraeean town of Nec'perya and its associated temple to the Dark Maiden. It is in the caldera of an extinct volcano in the Nether Mountains east of Silverymoon."

"The temple my ancestor and namesake built there is second only to the Pormenade in improtance to our faith and people on this world. Should the Promenade ever fall all that survive should seek Nec'perya d'l'Drathir or in the Common tongue Sanctuary of the Moon. It is an isolated piece of the Upper Dark and of the surface."

"My family followed Eilistraee from the time before the Crown Wars and my earliest namesake was one of her high priestesses in the ancient Dark Elven kingdom of Miyeritar. So I am Miyeritari not Ilythiiri, but I am still Ssi'Tel'Quessir. I am also the likely the last heir to Miyeritar and its throne though now it is the High Moor."

"Adian would you escort me to the ruins of Vrinn Ser and Morn's Forge to visit my mother's tomb and pay her spirit respects?"

"Very well, milady," Adian said. "There is a safe house just under a day from here, unless I misjudge our location. It is a small place, tended by an elderly dwarf. It is a modest farm, but there should be plenty of space for us in the barn and under it. From there we will be a single day from the vale I spoke of by a trail that was shown me by one of my sisters."

[quote:108cjr3y] "Adian would you escort me to the ruins of Vrinn Ser and Morn's Forge to visit my mother's tomb and pay her spirit respects?" [/quote:108cjr3y]

Adian's eyes widened.

"It would be my honor, lilady," he said. "I will have to speak with Lady Veladorn, but I do not think she would say no to this. I shall do my best to be as useful to you and yours as I possibly can."

A short time later, Adian spoke to Nedylene in a lower tone.

"A confession if I may, milady?" he asked. He glanced around, then continued. "When we found the human village I was angry. Even when it was revealed that it was that wretched priest that had goaded them into their madness. I...I wanted to hurt them. For a few moments, in my heart, I wanted to make them all pay for the deaths of the shrinemaidens. Even now I fear there is a part of me that might want some kind of retribution...but that is not the way of the Dark Maiden. Now I think of it and I am ashamed. How can I resolve this?"

The confusion in his voice was genuine and his eyes displayed his inner struggle. This was possibly the first time the young palidin had run up against such a gray area, and he seemed to have no idea how to resolve the conflict between his feelings and what he knew to be right.

Zazzt nodded," Very well," He turned to Laraun, "Perhaps it is time we spoke to our associates?" Laraun only shrugged, "I don't think it matters either way, Ilyth De'Daerth will not interven on either of our behalfs, should the Promenade not welcome me, or you, for that matter. From what I have heard, Matron Mothers do not take kindly to those who have betrayed their faith."

(Aaaand moving the thread along...)

The day moved along uneventfully, the members of the group chating amicably among themselves, with Adian alternately trying to ride a little closer to Kaeli and asking Zazzt about what parts of his past were okay to ask about.

Adian led the group to a respectable-looking farm set neatly atop a slight rise among the hills. The fields were all fenced off with weathered wood and were lush with new produce. The farmhouse itself was a sturdy, if short structure made of stone and trimmed with wood...all of it lovingly hand-carved.

Among the tomatoes a pair of donkey ears followed by the top of a large floppy had was moving around. As the group watched an odd pair came into view.

The donkey was a respectable member of its breed, but it moved about with a perpetually bored look on its face. The creature carried a pair of baskets slung on either side of it, both partly filled with ripe vegetables. The dwarf following along behind the beast was a much more remarkable sight. Despite the hat he had the dark, ruddy skin of a man used to regular sunburn. His face was lined with craggy wrinkles stretched taught over his lean skull, and his beard was a mottled display of varying shades of gray. His clothing was heavily work-stained, his boots caked with soil and the rest of him covered with varying combinations of dirt and sweat. He resembled an old tree stump given legs, weathered but refusing to be bowed by time...probably out of sheer stubbornness.

As the dwarf came into view he plucked a ripe tomato from the end vine and glared at it. Since the tomato didn't glare back or cower he put it in with the basket with others. He reached out and started to guide the donkey back down the next row, and this gave everyone a clear view of the fact that the old dwarf was missing his left arm.

Adian paused long enough to make a point of readjusting his cloak so that his armor was noticably more visible. He dismounted and walked quickly towards the old dwarf. The old man, for his part, stopped and watched the young drow approach from under eyebrows so thick it was a wonder he could see at all.

"Your pardon, master Resker," he said respectfully. "But I wished to ask if you would favor us with a night's stay. We have been travelling for some time and are in need of rest."

The old dwarf glowered at Adian and made a bit of a show of tugging the donkey's reins.

"I see you've finally found someone who can change yer diapers," he said in a gravelly voice loud enough to be heard by the entire group.

Adian looked crushed.

Laraun chuckled, "Ye best be watchin your tounge graybeard, afore me friend puts them fine swords to work on it." In a fair imitation of the dwarf. Zazzt just chuckled at his audacity, and as he walked by, smacked his head, "Well met good dwarf, I am known as Zazzt, the soon-to-be-dead elf is Laraun, fear not, he is quite at home in the forest and needs no housing this, or any night."

"Master Resker, we of House Rahn and our companions would love to accept your hospitality. We are on our way to meet with Mistress Qilue' at the Promenade and would enjoy a peaceful night's rest," said Lady Nedylene Rahn

The old dwarf looked up at Lady Rahn and nodded.

"Ma'am," he said shortly, as close to open respect as he would likely get. "I'd be grateful if ye'd join me at my table tonight, 'bout an hour from now. Always good t' hear news of all kinds.

"An' that goes double for you," Resker added with a suspicious glare at Zazzt. "I want ye where I can keep an eye on ye. Anyone else ye want to bring along, now's the time to say so, else the food's gonna be sparse."

Behind the dwarf Adian was trying to recover the tatters of his dignity.

"Master Resker's table is well known for its quality and generosity," Adian said to Nedylene and Zazzt. "I doubt you would find better..."

"If that's yer way of askin' to come too then you talk too much," Resker interrupted without looking back. "Anyone else so's I know how many plates to put out?" he asked.

The donkey, manwhile, continued to look bored.

Zazzt chuckled and bowed, "Aggreed, I accept the limitations of my race. But if you truely wish to protect yourself, it would be wise to keep an eye on my friend here, some of his best works have been dwarves." Zazzt eyed the old dwarf carefully, searching for any hint of realization of Laraun's name.

Resker gave Laraun a closer look but there was no spark of recognition.

"His 'work' stops at my door," he growled. "When I was young I'd have done somethin' about ye. Right now ye mind yer manners and we'll all be fine. I've already offered my table an' I won't be takin' it back. 'Sides, yer kin here are big on forgivin' stuff.

"But if ye try any 'work' at my table an' I'll have yer guts fer garters."

Despite the dwarf's obvious age there was the odd sense that there was somehow a little weight to his words, much in the same way of an old sergeant.

"Ah yes, the number of time I have heard that one..." Laraun chuckled, "Tell me, good dwarf what clan are you from?" But Zazzt wiggled his fingers, and the elf fell to the floor, asleep, "Erm, forgive the elf, he has some bad history with a dwarven clan in his early childhood days... Twas that incident that drove him to his profession, and eventually into a confrontation with me, I hope that you will not require the details?"

"Nope," Resker said curtly, eyeing Laraun. "None of my business. If he has a problem with me, a few days picking potatoes might change his attitude."

"Anyone else?" he asked, looking around at the others. Whether he was referring to Laraun's dispostion, dinner invitations, or commentary was unclear.

Laraun just scoffed, and walked off along the path, "If you have need of me, Zazzt can reach me. I will not suffer this dwarf any longer." He called over his shoulder.

Resker ignored Laraun's huff.

"Right," he said. "Dinner's in an hour. Don't be late.

"Outta my way," he barked, startling Adian out of his path. "Remember ye still owe me half a day's work!"

With that he stumped off, leading the donkey with his one arm. The creature's pace increased noticably as they neared the back of the stone house.

"Knock it off," Resker growled. "Yer gettn' to be as bad as the boy. What they're doing sending a brat out to fetch nobles and crazies I'll never know..."

Zazzt turned to Adian, "Well, now, this I will remeber for a while yet." He winked, "Is he always like that?"
