On the Edge of the Breathing Swamp

Post by Laelithra »

After hearing the haunting songs of the Elistraeeans on the borders of their woods and being stalked by things she could neither lay eye or blade upon, the drow had retreated deep into a bog due south to collect herself and shake off the magic that had seemed to enslave her mind. Not a slave to the song just yet, no, never.

No. Things had gone badly. After awakening upon the forest floor, mind clouded by ethereal notes and harmonies, Laelithra had bounded into the woods, desperately wishing to clear her head.

The cloak that was wrapped around her body was clearly too big for her, even though she stood a hi-par 5'6'', on the tall side for a lady drow. The rich black velvet had turned threadbare after so many seaons, but the material yet clung to the delicious scent of its former owner. A heady inscence with many delightful tones of various bloods and herbs. One of the few things that had drawn her from the eerie song's spell and back into her own mind.

Rechecking that her longsword was clipped to the belt on her hip, she proceeded forth again, detirmined to be assimilated into the Elistraeens.

A bog you might discover quickly is not a good place to be. The footing is unsteady, not like walking on stones of the tunnels or even the forest. The sounds that surround you, croaks and chips make it hard for you to hear of any danger. Ripples in the water that appear not current caused also might catch your eye. The flies that surround you and some seeking to feed on your blood also a distration.

The moonlight provides you some light to see what is about you.
The song in the distance has faded or perhaps continues but you can no longer hear it for all the noise of the bog.

Choice faces you for now you are alone.

Laelithra continued to choose her steps carefully, keeping the hem of her garments out of the water as she navigated the perilous course. She knew that the song would no doubt return as soon as she approached the fringe of the Eilistraeen's wood, but somehow she felt newly fortified, if not by her purpose, her concern for what lay beyond. The pidgeon did not take kindly to losing her quarry.

suddenly 10ft away lumbers a 9ft 500lb putrid gray, rubbery skinned humanoid with greenish-black course hair covering his body. his sagging shoulder leaving him hunched forward. his feeding is interrupted when he notices a drow invading his territory.
his arms dangle and drag the ground as he starts running, eyes intent on slaughter. a powerful arm reaches out to swat at the female.

((OOC: are you a Lolthite or Vhaeraunite or neither?))

Off in the distant connecting forest, she sat down byherself to think for a minute. she had been following the party for awhile. The Dark Ladies had been hard at work trying to convert many of the refugees. Inrii was interested but not quite ready to abandon her childhood faith. Off to the side she notice a single female leave the group into an unfamiliar bog. It was obvious the female was not of the surface drow. Inrii had been raised in House Jaelre but she could recognize priestess of the Spider Queen and infiltrators from Vhaeraun.
She was interested in who the drowess was. Stealthy and silently she followed her. It was in that moment that Inrii saw it, a monstrous beast (swamp troll?). the powerful creature swiped at the lone drow. The creature then summoned another one of his buddies. His fierce red eyes bore into his enemy. Suddenly, without warning a vine wrapped around Inrii's ankle pulling her down under the murky water. She quickly unsheathed a hidden dagger from her glove and began to saw the vine as it attempted to entangle her. Her lungs burned for air as her attack used up her oxygen. She forced her head up enough to break the surface and gasp a mouthful of air before being pulled under again. That second glance allowed her to see the other female in full fledged battle. Her head came above the surface again as she sawed another vine off. With her free hand she quickly cast a fireball at the creature.

A call of the hunting horn can be now heard in the distance, coming close fast.
The flash of moonlight might be detected being reflected from something coming nearer on the ground.

The Priestesses coming might argue soon about whose territory it is.

OOC: If it's alright, I'd like to join. Me bard's been getting kinda bored- never a good thing....

IC: The ypung drow slogged along through the boggy terrain, wondering yet again how he had managed to get so hopelessly lost. "That's the last time I trust directions from a gnome," he muttered to himself disgustedly. He didn't know what was squishing in his left boot- didn't WANT to know, in fact. All that was keeping him going was the fact that he knew there was a temple to the Dark Maiden somewhere in the area. At least, that was what he'd been told.

His keen ears picked up the unmistakable sounds of a fight up ahead, and he scowled. Should he check it out? He heard a sound he was all too familiar with- a fireball exploding on impact- and decided to take the chance. If nothing else, he might at least inquire of the victor if there was a warm inn nearby. Assuming the victor was not some hungry monster.

Lothir hurried toward the sound of battle, his fine green cloak waterlogged. He held it up to avoid being dragged down, and continued, pulling the silver daggers from his boots. (OOC: I ran out of time yesterday, sorry that ended so abruptly...)

((I'm thinking the person who started aint doing this one anymore. her last post was in '08. So do we continue without her or have her unconscious till she returns? I'm not sure how its works. So i will kill my monster and wait for a response... ;) ))

The fireball lit up the swamp in a orange light. Inrii was use to the light but it still would sting with the sudden brightness. The creature, slightly injured, began to rethink its tactics, when it felt the presence of another person tramping through its swamp. The troll(?) who had been attacking saw the fire and was caught by the blast, enough that its arm was engulfed. Its body began to light up like dead branches. It stopped its attack and ran off rolling in the swamp to extinguish the flames. Inrii launched another fireball the the fleeing troll and she felt the vines retreated from around her waist.
'They must be off to find another victim.'
She then noticed another drow heading her way ((the priestess fall into the muck?)) and heard the hunting horns nearing.

OOC : I am coming, though the reason is gone now. A hunt to kill a dead troll makes no sense, likely the reason I did not reply to Laelithra in 2008. Not much to work with.

IC: The fireballs does not deter the nearing sounds and soon all will see a naked human with long sword in one hand, the hunting horn in the other dash past you on the trail of the fleeing beast. With the turn of the hunt the horn is sounded again.
A few moments later two naked Drow female sword in hand follow, together with three male Drow. Intent on the hunt non of them stop. However you still hear more coming

A half-orc female and a human male now come into sight. He speaks "They have too much a lead and these merit some attention"
The female turns to look at those gathered, her battle axe at the ready.

"Foe perhaps, we kill now and let ladies find out later?

Hearing the sounds of something moving through the bog, the young drow turns, alert for danger, and softly whispers the commands to shift his blades to their saber form. Ice-blue eyes scan the brush and trees for the source of the noise, when he suddenly sees several lithe, naked onyx-skinned figures break into the clearing.

Recognizing the beginning of a Hunt, he grins, waving at them briefly before continuing toward the fireball's direction. Soon he comes upon a female drow, soaking wet and spattered with muck. He sprinted toward her, his light steps and fluid grace belying the difficulty of the terrain. Within a few seconds, he has reached her, a look of concern crosing his handsome, youthful features. The hood of his cloak falls back, revealing a very young male, with long snowy hair tied into a low tail with a black velvet ribbon.

"Vendui," he says, bowing slightly. "I thought you might need assistance, but I see you have things in hand, milady."

((Just so i do it right, the Hunting party is near us or chasing the fleeing troll?))

Inrii wiped the slimy water from her face. she could smell the muck as it seeped through her jet black clothes. The drow male came closer and introduced himself. She checked her equipment seeing none was lost in the struggle. Inrii then realized she was a bit exhausted from having been under water so long.
"Inrii" she replied holding off the use her surname in these parts, "tho you missed the fun."
Then remembered the other female who had been fighting the troll. Inrii rushed to the spot to find her not there. She shrugged and turned back to Lothir and keeping an eye on the approaching others. She called Zarstra, her lizard familiar, whispered to her and let her scuttle off.
"What brings you to these parts? You dont appear to be part of the Hunt."

The magical discharge of a fireball peaked Zazzt's attention, it was not magic clerics were known of using. Another wizard in these parts might not be the best for him, or his experiments. He looked at the wall of his tower, and it became a mirror, swirling with mists that parted instantly to show him the scene from high above. A lone troll was being chased by a group of drow, flames rose from the fireball, allowing him to see the scene. As usual, there were the drow preistesses, stark naked, with only a sword and horn to protect them from the perils of the night. He shook his head, in a sense, these females were just as mad as the Lolthites he killed at home, back in the city of Dhearrowdelma. One of many reasons he had abandoned it, to pursue his studies of magic on the surface realms. Another was that he just felt tired of the near constant intrigue. As a younger drow, he had liked to pit wits against his enemies, and had always come out on top, although not only on wits, but spells and blades also. He spared a glance to the twin blades hanging on his mantle, ornate affairs with enchantments that had made them blaze into infernal, sparkling life. He could summon mighty blasts of fire or lightning from each blade, but as he neared the end of his fourth century, he had found that his love for magic had surpassed his love of the blade. Certainly, he could hold his own against any swordsman Melee-Magthere turned out, but he was aware that his swordplay days were over. Mentally, he commanded the scrying mirror expand the view, and soon realized that if the troll continued its course, it would run smack dab into the door of his tower. Not something he wanted, not with the entourage of priestess following it. And so he was forced to abandon his scholarly pursuits, and pointed a finger at the troll in the scrying pool. His spell sent just enough of his mind into the troll's consiousness to allow him to divert the angle of its travel... ah hells why not? He thought, and caused the troll to stop and turn, facing the following preistesses. He even made it smile stupidly in the face of its doom. Then he retreated from its mind, and watched the show.
A fight need not end with the death of participant. A fight also ends when the desire to do violence is gone.

OOC: The 6 moved on chasing the fleeing and soon to be dead troll, all you need to del with is the half-orc and human that could not keep up with the hunt. In someways perhaps should wait for Zarae, but will post the male

IC:

The male holds up his hand.

"Nau, Jenia. Strangers are out friends. It is not meet to kill friends then raise from the dead if there really are friends."

Bows slightly to the few gathered. " I am Jordan and escort to Jenia. Are you in need of shelter, food or other aid?"

OOC: Inrii- I'm sorry, but I had to laugh at your post- you called him Vendui- which is a traditional drow greeting! Kinda like hello. Thanks for the chuckle!!

IC: "Inrii, was it? No Iim not part of the Hunt, though I'm sorely tempted to join. I've never been on one before. Oh, forgive my ill manners- I am Lothir. Pleased to meet you." He smiles warmly, then seems to suddenly remember who he is speaking to, and gives her a careful once-over, as if checking for hidden weapons or signs of tretchery.

Then the human and the half-orc arrive, and he turns, blades in hand, to face them. He takes stock of their state of dress, then gives his head a shake and chuckles softly. "Paranoia strikes again," he mutters to himself. "Greetings! Are you with the Hunt?" he asks brightly. Years of not a single soul to share his faith, and now he finds himself in the midst of a group of them!

When they ask if either is in need of aid, he says with a merry gleam in his eyes. "A clean, dry place to rest and bath would be nice. I don't even want to think about what I've been slogging through in this bog. My boots have been squishing for hours, and I've sunk a couple of times in holes, so I probably smell not much better than that troll back there."
By the Dark Maiden''s grace do we meet. May she guide and protect us.
