Born of the Spider Queen, Risen in Flame

Post by Alak_Chathrosin »

In his early years as a commoner amidst the bustle and metropolitan oppression of Menzoberranzan, Alak found himself in dire straits.

Almost all drow men were stronger than him. Most were larger. In the cascade of hatred that is Drow society, when the Matron's punished their daughters, their daughter's punished their men. These men sought to improve their images by taking it out on the commoners and the slaves about, and Alak was of the lowest rung of this black ladder.

His only asset, and he sharpened it quickly, was his mind. Yet, in the end, it proved as sharp a killing weapon as any scimitar, rapier, or dagger.

In a house so low that it barely qualified as noble, the court wizard took notice of an age old rule of three. His younger brother was a master of blades and assassination, and he a student of the art. There could be no apprentice for him, without a third brother being born, and that would not occur without a sacrifice to the Spider Queen, or an "accident."

This magus, thinking things through, and having had a chance encounter with Alak has he talked his way through a nasty run in with some orcs in the poor quarter, sought to make an apprentice of the lowest and most expendable of tools, an intelligent lowborn Drow.

Time passed with Alak proving himself in a host of tedious and humiliating deeds that only furthered his hatred of his master, and his master's Lady overseers. Lolth was never in Alak's heart save by her incarnation as an embodiment of hate, and in that he was as faithful as any could be.

When the opportunity presented itself, he took the sponsorship of the lowly Noble house towards the Academy's mage tower of Sorcere. There he began to devour the school of evocation, reveling in the power of lording command of elements exotic and extreme. To give orders to flame, command sound, to freeze the heart's blood of foes imagined and real, wary and surprised alike. It was a heady experience, and so Alak was distracted from the machinations of his adoptive house.

The Wizardly sponsor was growing jealous of Alak's rise in power, seeing what took him a hundred years accomplished in fifty. To make matters worse, Alak as a lowborn Drow was outshining the lowest house of the City of the Spider Queen.

Assassins were dispatched immediately, and Alak dispatched them in turn. However, knowing that the search would never end, he quickly discarded his name, and his image, and feigned his death at the hands of the attackers, to vanish into the mists of the mercenaries within Menzoberranzan.

There is another story here that requires a great deal of time to tell. In the hands of a mercernary household, Alak fell in love, though it wasn't returned. He came to serve the 12th house of the great Drow city, and watched it fall, not from enemies without, but from affection within. The nobles of that house had found the teachings of the Dark Maiden during a surface raid.

The explosion of infighting between Lolth loyalists and the newly inspired Eilistraeeans was brutal, and Alak had to choose between the simpler choices. While the First Born male and the First Priestess and Daughter of the House were debating the value of love over power, freedom over service, and the surface world of light versus the familiar Night below....Alak had only to choose between freedom, or slavery.

Freedom is the right of the strong, Alak learned in the years that followed. The flames burn away the weak and forge of the soul's steel sterner substance.

While that renegade noble house no longer roams the surface of Toril, Alak had endured, as a devotee of Kossuth's flames, all the while mastering the many manifestations of elemental power.

To conquer a village, or even a nation is nothing, compared to wielding the fires of the world. Or so Alak will tell you. Ask him, if can.
