Lloth dies, someone gets screwed...

Since the Chosen of Eilistraee is a religious oriented player group, naturally there is a place to have theological discussions. That is in-game religions; please leave real-world religion out of it. Debate the fine points of a certain dogma, how a church can enforce worship while staying true to its tenets or simply why one deity is better than another one is. All are free to talk about it here.

Lloth dies, someone gets screwed...

Post by Narsia Ny'Dhun » Fri Mar 30, 2007 6:37 am

Here's a thought that came to mind when I was discussing the conflict within the drow pantheon with a DM friend of mine.

Now I'm pretty sure that this thought has occured to everyone already, but I'd like to get opinions on it anyway. Think about what happens when a god kills another god, the victor absorbs the portfolio of its victim.

Now, I don't know that much about the D&D rules which the books appear to be based on but I do know that Lloth is a major diety and with the exception of Hallistra who blew her chance I'm willing to bet that the only one who can kill Lloth is another god.

Let's say for sake of argument that Lloth is killed, the victor absorbs her portfolio and is destroyed by her influence.

Almost makes you wish the latest trilogy won't end the way a lot of us are hoping...

Your thoughts?

While there are rules for killing dieties, there are no rules for the Result.

Some Killed deities , either by deity or mortal, gained direct power. In other cases other deities not involved in the battle and death of the deity gained power.

IAE Lolth will not die based on the WotC bottom line, nor will she change much.

[color=indigo:2pfsgylz]Now, this isn't official, but I think it is accurate: think of it this way, if an evil person kills an evil deity the they may or may not gain their portfolio (depending upon that person's specific alignment and personality). If a good character slays an evil deity the they will definitely NOT recieve that god's portfolio, as that would likely go right in the face of their alignment. If a good character killed a good god that would shift their alignment towards evil, so they would not gain that god's porfolio, and finally, if an evil character killed a good deity, then they would not gain that god's porfolio, as it would go against their alignment. If that makes any sense.[/color:2pfsgylz]

Unfortunately, i`m almost sure the Wizards/the writers/whoever will decide the final fate of the drow pantheon want Lolth to stay alive and relatively powerful. For what reason? Dont know. But i seriously doubt they will destroy the only "good-aligned" deity in the pantheon, either. So i dont think anything much will change for those two. Maybe Eilistraee will end up somewhat more powerful, or maybe she will be so weakened that she will merge with another deity (Selune? Sehanine?) like Zandilar did. But in the latter case it will be a 50/50 merging, leaving quite a lot of the original Eilistraee in the new deity.

But if anyone wants to kill Lolth off in his/her own campaign, i dont believe the one who kills the oversized bug will definately become like her. (The legend about the killer of a dragon becoming a dragon himself is not always true in the Realms - Finder Wyvernspur, anyone?) It might depend on the character`s strength of will. Does Eilistraee have enough strength of will to pull it off? Who knows.

Having read the backcover text for the upcoming "Drow of the Underdark" I don't [i:4ddlaelv]think[/i:4ddlaelv] they are going to kill of Lolth - the back cover text talks about the drow of the underdark serving her. Now, the new "Drow of the Underdark" book is a Core D&D product, not a Forgotten Realms product, so its conceivable they will "kill" Lolth off for the Forgotten Realms and make her just a Core Goddess - but I doubt it. They went to a lot of trouble to explain why and how the Demonweb became its own plane (as illustrated on the Forgotten Realms tree of the planes thingy) so I doubt they are going to kill her off - but who knows? Anything is possible.
AKA Sheyreiza Valakasha, Yathtallar d'Lolth, Princess of the Demonweb Pits, aka Ghenni'salla Tlabbar, aka L'olath'anon, the Dark Flower, aka the Valsharess of ALFA, aka ... well ... you get the picture.

As far as it goes, Ed clearly believes Lolth will always be the most worshiped Deity by the Drow "at leat in the underdark"
While Ed does not own FR his opinions clearly a major factor of what occurs in the Realms.

Yes. Because sadistic drow chicks with whips sell books. And artists often paint them with minimal clothing, which makes them more popular.

All right!! Naked drow chicks!!! But seriously, I don't think they'll kill Lolth. I mean she's what makes the Underdark tic. She's the major force among the drow. She'll be always there. It's simply impossible. She's too important for the whole drow race.

As far as I'm concerened they won't kill any drow deieties...It's like a relatshionship beetwen the Church and Lucifer... Think of the bad bussinies the Church would have, if either Satan or Lucifer pakced they're bags and left for a one weeks vacation to Havaii...

Besides, if Llolth dissapeared, the female population of the Drow would start dressing...decently...And we can't have that...can we Mikayla?

Some of them could become followers of Loviatar. They are usually even more scantily dressed, and carry whips as well :-) There`s not much difference, really.

P.S. Okay, i completely agree about Lucifer in Judeo-Christian mythology, but at least old Lucy is a much more interesting character than Lolth could ever be.
