the sourse of arcane magic

Since the Chosen of Eilistraee is a religious oriented player group, naturally there is a place to have theological discussions. That is in-game religions; please leave real-world religion out of it. Debate the fine points of a certain dogma, how a church can enforce worship while staying true to its tenets or simply why one deity is better than another one is. All are free to talk about it here.

the sourse of arcane magic

Post by Thalon Mercrow » Fri Jan 08, 2010 4:49 am

iv been wondering , where dos arcane magic come from? now everyone knows that cleics get there mojo from there gods, druids and rangers get theres from nature, etc, etc,

but this begs the question where in the nine hells do arcane energy come from now some of it came from the weave but it dos not come directly from the waeve as magic can be cast without the use of it and when Mystra was murderd magic still contioned to exist. also if all arcane magic did come from the weave then it would no longer be consoderd arcane as it would have come from a god (Mystra)

which once again leads me to wonder, where dos it come from?

I did touch on this topic, though perhaps not here.

There are many magics in the Realms, there is Name magic, there is rune magic, there is the tattoo magic. There are unnamed magics.

All in all what it all comes down to is deity/universe magic, just offered in different ways by those deities or forces of nature.

Oh it appears that Ed appears to be trying to get the Weave back as the most common source of magic. If he succeeds or not, there always was other ways to access magic.

Thalon you're not the only one bewildered by this issue. I've tried to address it for the sake of my own campaign I'm writing, but have failed whatsoever. I think the best way of checking is to get one's hands on the Magic of Faerun source book. The truth is out there.

Still, when it comes to 4ed. that's the real mystery. Mystra is dead, the Weave is no longer, but Shar still exists, and there's no explanation how come magic still functions. I mean sure, there are now huge wholes in the ground (Undercasm) there are floating in the sky blocks of earth and islands, but where does it all come from? No one knows, yet. Not that it's of any particular interest to me.

its good to know that im not the only warrioer scholer out there, now i have my one theroy on how all this hocus pocus works so bear with me, i belive that arcane magic is just bascily the users will minfiested, i mean it makes sense take the wizerd for example(thecincly with enougth hardwork and time just about any one can learn to do it) there are many wayys to do magic as Bhaern said (i.e.Name magic, rune magic, tattoo magic, etc, etc) but utimatly the sourse is the same,[i:124jc35t]the user![/i:124jc35t] i also summise theat mystra and indeed the weave its self is the collected enrgy of said magic users a sort of spellpool if you will(i saw the rules and idea for it in the tome and blood supplemnt) which would also explan why so many of the spell casters died, whent crazy,or had there powers go out of control. this also explains the blue fire the tectonic shifs and amany other things the weave(hereafter refeared to as the collective reserve of torials spell casters energys)was distryed a it spilled over to the materle univers with intresting results.

and that my friends is my two copper picaes on arcane magic, the spellplauge, the weave and other arcane matters :D

Magic originally came from the goddess Mystryl[/url:34tk653g]. She embodied the Weave[/url:34tk653g]. In -339 DR a Netherese wizard called Karsus[/url:34tk653g] created a 12th level spell that would allow him to temporarily steal the power of a deity[/url:34tk653g]. He cast this spell on Mystryl. Karsus was unable to cope with the power of the deity Mystryl was unable to hold the Weave together. Karsus's plan (to use the power to defeat the phaerimm) backfired and many of the magical floating Netherese cities fell (with the source of magic chopped off).

Mystryl selected a young wizard and turned her into Mystra[/url:34tk653g], a new goddess of the Weave. During the Time of Troubles[/url:34tk653g] Ao forced all the gods except Helm to walk the earth as mortals. Before loosing her godhood, Mystra put part of her power into a pendant and gave it to one of her Chosen called Midnight. While Mystra was a mortal the Weave became dangerously unpredictable. Mystra later attempted to force her way past Helm and Helm destroyed her.

Ao chose Midnight to become the third godess of magic. She chose to change her name to Mystra to make the transition easier, so Midnight is actually the second deity called Mystra[/url:34tk653g].

In 1385 DR Shar[/url:34tk653g], who controlled the Shadow Weave[/url:34tk653g] worked with Cyric[/url:34tk653g] to kill Midnight (Mystra) and steal her power. But Shar's plan backfired. The death of Mystra caused the collapse of both the Weave and the Shadow Weave and set off the Spellplague[/url:34tk653g]. The Spellplague continued until 1479 DR, with an event known as Mystra's Return. Part of Mystra had survived and was hiding out in a bear (go figure) and Elminster managed to return a lot of the goddesses power.

So it looks like you need a goddess of magic to make arcane magic work normally in the Realms and that if you screw with the goddess you screw with the Weave too.

(Presumably Mystra putting part of herself into a bear means that Eilistraee may well have hidden part of herself in an animal a random Miyeritari worshipper or even a non-drow worshipper. Or maybe Bobby Ewing will walk out of the shower into Eilistraee's bedroom and she will wake up and tell him she has had a terrible dream about a Spellplague. :p  )
