A Slew of NWN2 Reviews

Post by Shir'le E. Illios »

I’m getting a bit backlogged with these. But I thought I’d better post them for those of you who are interested. Though to be honest I haven’t read most of them yet myself (since I’d much rather play the game than read reviews about it :tear: ), they all seem to be quite positive overall.

Anyway, here they are with a link and the final paragraph for each of them:

The original Neverwinter Nights is so immersive that it continues to attract new fans to this day, but the time for a true sequel has arrived and thankfully, Neverwinter Nights 2 delivers. This extremely enjoyable action RPG contains fabulous visuals, plenty of options, and incredible gameplay. Neverwinter Nights 2 is truly one of the most epic adventures found on a PC, and it should be purchased without hesitation.

[quote:3pld7x37] Anyone looking for a lengthy, complex, and engaging single player role playing experience should look no further than Neverwinter Nights 2. Thanks to the inclusion of fully controllable characters, there's plenty of enjoyable tactical combat to be conducted in the many dungeons the game runs you through. On top of that, there's an interesting storyline buffered by hours of fully voiced dialogue, an excellent soundtrack, good writing, and strong characters. The ability to play through the official campaign with others online in addition to the toolset that can be used to create and play your own adventures gives Neverwinter Nights 2 a bottomless replay value. It's not without faults. Inventory management will eat up large chunks of your play experience, the game is a massive system hog for minimal visual benefit, and you will run into noticeable bugs. You'll also find maps are limited in terms of their explorable area and aspects of tactical combat are occasionally undermined by the frailty of many enemies. Despite Neverwinter Nights 2's tendency to occasionally frustrate you, it remains an enjoyable, worthwhile, and lasting experience.

[quote:3pld7x37] While its design is starting to show its age a little, the engine is far from perfect and so on and so forth and so bloody whining, there's still enough of the magic here which will reduce the seasoned PC role-playing gamer to rapture. It's not the future of PC gaming, but a glorious slice of the recent past. This may be the last adventure like this you'll ever go on. And there's a certain style and grandeur to anything like that.

In short, great. But what's next?

[quote:3pld7x37]It says something that, despite these technical issues, we found it very hard to tear ourselves away from Neverwinter Nights 2 long enough to actually write this review. Just like its acclaimed spiritual predecessors, the game is wholly engrossing and begs to be explored. Rare is a game with such meaningful and varied character development, and the plethora of options available will guarantee that many players will want to indulge in its experience from the point of view of several different types of characters. Neverwinter Nights 2 is one of the best RPGs we've played in a long time -- bugs and performance issues be damned.

[quote:3pld7x37] So here we are, at the end of our arduous journey. Did I enjoy playing Neverwinter Nights 2? Yes I did, even though I’m not exactly a D&D fan, but the story, characters and the choices I had at my disposal made me overlook the bad AI, frustrating party micromanagement, gamebreaking bugs or the Spartan inventory system. Many will ask if they should play NWN 2 considering that it’s geared mainly towards D&D players. Yes, you should play it but you’ll also have to leave some of your RPG preconceptions at the door if you want to truly enjoy the game. And as expected, the game ending leaves the door wide open for at least an expansion, so I have a feeling that in the future we’ll spend quite some time in the Forgotten Realms.

[quote:3pld7x37]Despite some minor failings, which I anticipate will be patched quite shortly, Neverwinter Nights 2 is an exceptional game. This game has one of the best single player storylines seen in not just a CRPG, but in any RPG in years. If you are a real RPG fan, you owe it to yourself to give it a chance.

[quote:3pld7x37]With all this on offer, Neverwinter Nights 2 will surely keep RPG fans busy for a long time. You won't regret buying the game, especially if you've played through the original as well as the expansion packs. On the other hand, Obsidian obviously hasn't made any real breakthroughs, which is a bummer, really, seeing as the original brought quite a lot of fresh ideas to the RPG scene.
