I was curious as to see how this project is going?
Building a NWN in NWN1 was tough enough but I've never played with the tool set for NWNII so I can only imagine how much work it could be.

I'm not much use at scripting or programming but I can come up with good quest ideas if it's going to be a persistant world server.

Or some ideas on how to balance it out, ie; what sort of level caps we might be looking at? How much magic & items will there be?

From my own experience in playing on 2 persistant NWN servers {arabel & EfU} I'd learn towards their models on items and magic.
Less is more is actually a good thing. If everyone can get hold of magic weapons, then they aren't so special. Also, crafting: I'd limit this serverly as it's been shown to cause tremendous lag when people start crafting weapons, armour etc.
Economics: be careful with this area. Don't make it too easy for people to farm gold from selling items from quests etc. Limit the amount they can get from merchants otherwise you'll end up with some players who'll have massive amounts of gold [in the 100,00's] and this is plainly ridiculous.
Quests need to be balanced with a good risk/reward ratio. In otherwords, tough quests that will end up costing players items like healing potiosn etc, should have a balanced reward at the end. Not necessarily potions to replace those lost but perhaps more exp, or interesting/unique loot. EfU did this really well in that many of the items found were limited in the number of charges they had in them. It worked well and it made the players think carefully as to what resources they'd deploy in a scripted quest.

Lastly: DM Spice.

This is what makes or breaks a server. Scripted quests are Ok, but really they are only a means to an ends - getting exp. items and gold. The real fun from online RPing comes from when a DM is involved and posses the creatures or intervines and makes life "interesting"
Also have a long term story arc or a number of plot threads to base the server around. It's no good just having a server which people can log on, bash some monsters, socialise a bit. Those servers end up dying but if you have good story lines and good player/DM interaction, it can work.

On final note, running a server can be fun but from speaking with friends who DM'd on Arabel & EfU, it can also be very trying. You'll have to deal with idiots and twinkers/cheaters and griefers.

My advice is to make it password access only. that way you limit who can get on. Otherwise you''ll be constantly hitting to boot bvutton and having to intervine in player disputes.

Oh, before I forget: PVP - this is VERY important.
I'd allow it but it MUST be carefully done as it can go wrong and I've seen instances where really good players end up quitting because of a bad PVP ambush that was not DM sanctioned.
If you allow PVP, it should be supervised by a DM so as to avoid any bad feelkings that may result from a characters death. It has to be that way but IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE FAIR! This is very important to note. Murders and ambushes are the meat & drink of evil and to some exten, neutral characters. Ganging up on someone via an ambush isn't nice, espacially if you're the one being ambushed but it's what happens in the realms all the time so deal wth it.

There, that's my 2 coppers pieces on DMing & Rping on servers.
Hell, if I knew what I was doing and had enough spare time, I'd volunteer to be a DM but I don't but I am still able to help out here and there
In War: Resolution. In Defeat: Defiance. In Victory: Magnanimity. In Peace: Goodwill.

Ah! If only it was for NWN I'd be able to help! :-[

I've used your dictionary here for a quite some time as it's the most reliable source for Drow. (House Maerdyn's dictionary was my previous language hot spot until it mysteriously vanished one day.) The dictionary here is far superior anyway. (Though it doesn't have Drothir listed. )

Anyways, if you ever opt for NWN let me know! :D

Found another there, though it hasn't been crosschecked with this one it does give the option of Elvish. No "Drothir" either though, and i get the impression it's somewhat limited even though i can't figure out why that is.

Probably because it's 1:30 am here. G'nite ^^

Oh, and welcome Dragonessa *sleepy smile*

:) been playing NWN2 online ,almost since launch now ,and really enjoy rp'ing on my own server .

I think this is the one server that might interest me other than the one i've been playing on since launch, I've felt no need to wander, nor check out the competing other servers.

I'll be certain to check out this as soon as it sees the light of day
