Neverwinter Delayed

Post by Shir'le E. Illios »

I know that a number of people have been looking forward to Neverwinter (by Cryptic Studios), but unfortunately it seems that the game has been delayed until late 2012. As reported by GameSpot[/url:197s9z53]:
[quote:197s9z53][img:197s9z53]http://image.gamespotcdn.net/gamespot/i ... _embed.jpg[/img:197s9z53]

When Atari first announced the PC role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons: Neverwinter, the publisher did so under a cloud of uncertainty, thanks to an ongoing legal dispute with Hasbro over the seminal pen-and-paper RPG license[/url:197s9z53]. While Hasbro and Atari today announced a settlement to their dispute, Neverwinter has been delayed after all, due not to legal wrangling but to the publisher selling the game's developer, Cryptic Studios, to Perfect World Entertainment[/url:197s9z53].

Neverwinter was revealed last August with a generic 2011 release date attached. As a result of the Cryptic Studios sale, the game is now set for release in late 2012, with Perfect World "investing in a more immersive experience" for the game.[/quote:197s9z53]
Yeah, I've got [i:197s9z53]no[/i:197s9z53] idea what a "more immersive experience" means, but somehow I doubt it's a good thing. But I guess we'll see.

I think that MOMRPGzation of PnP games is bad in itself. No hard feelings, but stereotype of MOMRPG surrounding is not cool.

Looks like your worst fears have been played out. Perfect World Entertainment has said that they are allowing Cryptic to move forward with plans to turn Neverwinter into a full on MMO. I'm going to be sorely disappointed if this removes the campaign/module builder they had been hyping up prior to the acquisition.

Ah yes, with all the site troubles I nearly forgot.

News as posted by IGN[/url:k5bq8gfw]. An excerpt:

[quote:k5bq8gfw]This new home for Cryptic has allowed the developer to continue their MMO-development tradition with Neverwinter[/url:k5bq8gfw]. That's right, Neverwinter is shifting from the co-operative multiplayer game that was announced last year and into full-fledged, free-to-play MMO territory. In fact, it's shifting towards the action end of the MMO spectrum. Transferring a Dungeons & Dragons universe into an action setting might sound strange to D&D veterans, but it's been done before with some of the Baldur's Gate games. The 4th Edition of D&D also has some new rules that lend itself well to action games, which is exactly why Neverwinter is using 4th Edition as its ruleset.

The developer says Neverwinter will be closer to a game like Nexon's Vindictus[/url:k5bq8gfw], where combat is controlled by mouse clicks, and where pattern recognition and reflexes are the keys to successfully murdering hordes of monsters. Vindictus is also session-based, with each action foray designed to last about twenty minutes (Rusty Hearts, mentioned above, also follows this pattern).[/quote:k5bq8gfw]

While I enjoyed Vindictus for what it was, I don't think that kind of gameplay suits the roleplaying game I'd be looking for. So safe to say that I'm not at all happy about this change in direction. Then again, it [i:k5bq8gfw]does[/i:k5bq8gfw] make it easier to maintain my boycott of WotC products.

Speaking of Neverwinter, there's also this[/url:k5bq8gfw]. Again an excerpt:

[quote:k5bq8gfw]While [i:k5bq8gfw]Neverwinter[/i:k5bq8gfw], the second book in R.A. Salvatore's [i:k5bq8gfw]Neverwinter Saga[/i:k5bq8gfw] hits store shelves today, the author tells me that Neverwinter is only the frosting on top of the latest Drizzt tale.

"The core story isn't [i:k5bq8gfw]Neverwinter[/i:k5bq8gfw]," Salvatore explained during a phone interview last Friday. "The core story is what happens to Drizzt when his world changes, and the feelings of recklessness, fear, anger, and also hope that maybe he'll be able to have another good life. That story was already in place. I knew what I wanted to write, and that's the cake.

"The frosting is Neverwinter."

According to the writer, Wizards of the Coast called him up and asked him if he would be in the area when he wrote his next Drizzt book, and as luck would have it, he would be. After a summit to determine how to logically tie the story together with the marketing push, [i:k5bq8gfw]The Neverwinter Saga[/i:k5bq8gfw] was born.[/quote:k5bq8gfw]

Seems Wizards of the Coast is really pushing Neverwinter... all the more reason to stay away from it.

Yea... Think I'm going to stick with either Path Finder or Fantasy Hero myself.

I hope it's not another MMO. I have no qualms with MMO's (I play City of Heroes from time to time), but Wizards of the Coast already has Dungeons and Dragons Online. Then again, up here in the Puget Sound, we have no idea what the word "enough" means.

Personally, at this point, I'm [i:hfgv9dof]much[/i:hfgv9dof] more excited about Pathfinder Online[/url:hfgv9dof] (for which I really should make a news post).

In slightly related news.... WoTC has decided to do a fifth edition D&D[/url:2ohh2885].... Wasn't 4th Ed released not that long ago? *sigh*

At least, this time, it looks like they're going to ask for feedback from their customers. It is not official, but if you've got something in particular you'd like to see in the 5E Realms this is the place to say it: [url:32xnehcv]http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/ ... in_5E?pg=1[/url:32xnehcv]. There's also a poll at Candlekeep forums [url:32xnehcv]http://forum.candlekeep.com/topic.asp?T ... hichpage=1[/url:32xnehcv].

Thank you. I posted on the Wizards forum. I doubt that it will do any good, but at least I've had my say (again).

[EDIT] Ps. I find it telling how many people in the Candlekeep forum seem to be against the changes wrought by 4E.

From what I understand, 4th edition was a commercial flop. The MMO feel that was supposed to bring in people familiar with WOW and other MMO's not only didn't work, but actually backfired and drove off a lot of die-hard players. I know at my local comic and games shop, games like Shadowrun and other lesser known RPG's are far out-selling 4th Edition. Gabi (the owner) actually still sells a lot of 2nd, 3rd, and 3.5E books, but she has a hard time moving 4E.

I'll second that. from what I've heard (we have no book or game store near where I live) a lor of shops are having this problem with 4th. The good news however, is that they are doing a playtest of the "D&D Next" prototype/beta version (or whatever you like to call it) and it has a lot of the feel of older editions. Also, there were several Announcements made at Gen-Con to try to fix what 4th ed "broke" in regards to the FR, so I am hopeful. Don't know how this will affect the Neverwinter game, but.... *shrugs* Also note- ALL EDITION SUPPORT! (IE- bringing back dead gods, fixing problems from Spellplague and other RSE messes, removing that Abeir nonsens, etc...)
