Mass Effect 2 - DLC Reviews and more

Post by Shir'le E. Illios »

It’s been nearly two months since I last reported on Mass Effect 2, but in the meantime I’ve collected a slew of links and information (just never had the time to post them). So just as with my previous Dragon Age post I’ll limit it mostly to posting a list of links, organized into sections. I’ve also left off most (if not all) of the DLC announcements and previews, because all announced DLC has since already been released. I will post reviews for them though.

And my apologies for taking so very long to post all of this.

The following list of articles are various websites looking at Mass Effect 2 from various angles. Most of them are about whether Mass Effect 2 can be considered an RPG or not.

As for my views on whether Mass Effect 2 is an RPG or not, there’s a lot that I agree with in the Blog of War posts. The only thing is that my views are almost reversed to the conclusion in the article; I feel that it shares enough in common with other games classified as ‘RPGs’ to be called one (I just look at a different feature set and realize that games are continually evolving). However, I also feel that it’s particularly light on the ‘roleplaying’ part. Sure, you make story choices (more than most other games), but in the end you’re not really [i:20rq29mm]playing[/i:20rq29mm] Shepard, you’re more [i:20rq29mm]directing[/i:20rq29mm] him/her. You never really define the character and instead just define the paths the character walks.

I could probably write several full articles on the subject though (and don’t have the time to do so), so I’ll leave it at that.

[b:20rq29mm]BioWare Comments[/size:20rq29mm][/b:20rq29mm]

Over the last two months BioWare has made a number of comments on a variety of subjects related to Mass Effect 2. These include some interviews, but are mostly relatively stand-alone comments that some news sites picked up on.

That last article just has me wondering “why are you getting so worked up over [i:20rq29mm]one[/i:20rq29mm] character’s tight outfit?”. And the homosexuality one not only pisses me off (I [i:20rq29mm]want[/i:20rq29mm] a game that feels it can include homosexuality as the normal thing that it is), but it also explains why I feel that Mass Effect 2 lacks roleplaying elements; if [i:20rq29mm]I[/i:20rq29mm] can’t define what fits [i:20rq29mm]my[/i:20rq29mm] character then it’s not really my character and thus not really a roleplaying game.

Of course the Asari are technically not female so that’s technically not homosexuality (not my view; that’s BioWare’s view). So there’s still some hope for Mass Effect 3. Maybe they’ll even include a male-only species that’s technically not male.

[b:20rq29mm]DLC Videos[/size:20rq29mm][/b:20rq29mm]

Since Mass Effect 2 has been released two major DLC has been released for the game as well. The first one, Firewalker, is free and gives you a vehicle with a couple of vehicle levels. The second one, Stolen Memory, costs money and adds another squadmate much as the DLC for Zaeed did. For both of these there are a number of gameplay movies. Though note that they, particularly the Stolen Memory ones, will likely include spoilers.

[b:20rq29mm]DLC Reviews[/size:20rq29mm][/b:20rq29mm]

Both Firewalker and Stolen Memory have been released, so a coupel of reviews for this DLC have appeared as well. Reviews could contain spoilers (I honestly don’t recall; haven’t even read a lot of them in detail).

I thought that Stolen Memory would be good, the character looks interesting and the gameplay sounds fun, but with all the reviews stating how it’s way too short for the price I think I’ll just pass on it. Which means that I also won’t pick up Firewalker just yet as I have no intention to play the game for one little piece of free DLC. Ah well, maybe they’ll have better DLC in the future (they didn’t do so hot with Dragon Age either).

[b:20rq29mm]Future Mass Effect[/size:20rq29mm][/b:20rq29mm]

And finally this section contains some references as to what’s coming in Mass Effect’s future. It’s mostly references to Mass Effect 3, as no new DLC has been announced yet, but there’s also at least one rumor of future DLC.

[*:20rq29mm][[url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/vi ... 2:20rq29mm]link[/url:20rq29mm]] to Rumored Liara DLC at The Escapist.
Rumors are floating about about some DLC based around Liara.[/*:m:20rq29mm][/list:u:20rq29mm]
I seem to recall hearing those DLC rumors as far back as the original release of Mass Effect 2 (though not with the detail listed in the post). And since I quite like Liara I hope that it’s true. But I also hope that she’s [i:20rq29mm]not[/i:20rq29mm] being added as a squadmate (based on how they treated the previous two squadmate DLCs and how that wouldn’t guarantee her survival for ME3) and I hope that it doesn’t resolve the whole Shadow Broker thing (just perhaps Liara’s involvement with the character). I hope it’s bigger than the previous DLC and that it’s post-game end; kind of like a mini expansion. But we’ll see.

Anyway, that’s all regarding Mass Effect for now. I don’t really expect that much more until E3 (mid June).
