Mass Effect 2 - DLC Reviews and more

Postby Shir'le E. Illios » Wed Apr 21, 2010 3:08 pm

It’s been nearly two months since I last reported on Mass Effect 2, but in the meantime I’ve collected a slew of links and information (just never had the time to post them). So just as with my previous Dragon Age post I’ll limit it mostly to posting a list of links, organized into sections. I’ve also left off most (if not all) of the DLC announcements and previews, because all announced DLC has since already been released. I will post reviews for them though.

And my apologies for taking so very long to post all of this.

Analysis Articles

The following list of articles are various websites looking at Mass Effect 2 from various angles. Most of them are about whether Mass Effect 2 can be considered an RPG or not.

  • [link] to “Why We Should Never Underestimate BioWare (or Canadians) Again” at VGChartz.
In this article the writer looks at why he feels that Mass Effect 2 is an important landmark in gaming history.
  • [link] to “Final Thoughts on Mass Effect 2” at 1UP.
In the “The Grind” column the author compares Mass Effect 2 to The Godfather II.
  • [link] to “Mass Ineffective” at Everyday Gamers.
The author explains why he feels that Mass Effect 2 is barely an RPG.
  • [link] to “Mass Effect 2 RPG or Shooter” at GameZenith.
The author looks at whether Mass Effect 2 is more a shooter or an RPG (scorning BioWare for not including enough RPG elements).

Part one of a two-part post looking at whether Mass Effect 2 is an RPG or not.

As for my views on whether Mass Effect 2 is an RPG or not, there’s a lot that I agree with in the Blog of War posts. The only thing is that my views are almost reversed to the conclusion in the article; I feel that it shares enough in common with other games classified as ‘RPGs’ to be called one (I just look at a different feature set and realize that games are continually evolving). However, I also feel that it’s particularly light on the ‘roleplaying’ part. Sure, you make story choices (more than most other games), but in the end you’re not really playing Shepard, you’re more directing him/her. You never really define the character and instead just define the paths the character walks.

I could probably write several full articles on the subject though (and don’t have the time to do so), so I’ll leave it at that.

BioWare Comments

Over the last two months BioWare has made a number of comments on a variety of subjects related to Mass Effect 2. These include some interviews, but are mostly relatively stand-alone comments that some news sites picked up on.

  • [link] to “will have enough DLC” comment at VG247.
The BioWare docs tell VG247 that they feel that Mass Effect 2 will have enough satisfying content for players.

Armando Troisi, lead cinematic designer on the title, talks about the difference between objective and subjective story.

  • [link] to Cerberus comment at VG247.

  • [link] to “No Homosexuality” explanation at The Escapist.
The BioWare docs and Caseu Hudson explain why there’s no homosexuality in Mass Effect 2.
  • [link] to “The Thoughts Behind Miranda’s Behind” at Kotaku.
Short interview with Casey Hudson about Miranda’s Ass.
That last article just has me wondering “why are you getting so worked up over one character’s tight outfit?”. And the homosexuality one not only pisses me off (I want a game that feels it can include homosexuality as the normal thing that it is), but it also explains why I feel that Mass Effect 2 lacks roleplaying elements; if I can’t define what fits my character then it’s not really my character and thus not really a roleplaying game.

Of course the Asari are technically not female so that’s technically not homosexuality (not my view; that’s BioWare’s view). So there’s still some hope for Mass Effect 3. Maybe they’ll even include a male-only species that’s technically not male.

DLC Videos

Since Mass Effect 2 has been released two major DLC has been released for the game as well. The first one, Firewalker, is free and gives you a vehicle with a couple of vehicle levels. The second one, Stolen Memory, costs money and adds another squadmate much as the DLC for Zaeed did. For both of these there are a number of gameplay movies. Though note that they, particularly the Stolen Memory ones, will likely include spoilers.

Of course, nothing is as good (or bad) as playing yourself. :p

DLC Reviews

Both Firewalker and Stolen Memory have been released, so a coupel of reviews for this DLC have appeared as well. Reviews could contain spoilers (I honestly don’t recall; haven’t even read a lot of them in detail).

  • [link] to Firewalker review at Thankless Grind.
Giving the DLC a low score (2/5) because it doesn’t have anything of what made Mass Effect 2 good.
  • [link] to Firewalker Micro-Review at Kotaku.
They like how the vehicle handles and that it feels like a proof-of-concept, but dislike that all it has is driving.
  • [link] to DLC Roundup at Eurogamer.
Reviewing both DLC they feel that Firewalker is nice, but doesn’t fit very well and Stolen Memory gets an 8/10.
  • [link] to Kasumi’s Stolen Memory review at IGN.
Giving it a 7.5 they think that what’s there is great, there’s just way too little of it for the asked price.

    [html]<object id='ignplayer' width='640' height='360' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=Mass2_kasumi_vdr_040710&object=65174'/></object>[/html]
  • [link] to Kasumi’s Stolen Memory review at Thankless Grind.
Giving it a 3/5 they generally liked it, giving a nice one-hour bite of more ME2 content, but it’s rather short for the price.
  • [link] to Masumi’s Stolen Memory review at Just Push Start.
Giving it a 3.5/5 they liked Kasumi (the character) and that it’s more ME2, but feel that it comes too late.
  • [link] to Kasumi’s Lost Memory review at AfterShock Forums.
They feel that the character is useless and the story poor, would’ve been fine if free, but not worth the price.
  • [link] to Kasumi’s Stolen Memory review at Substance TV.
They feel that the story is interesting and the character worth the price, advising to buy the DLC.
  • [link] to Kasumi’s Stolen Memory review at RunDLC.
Giving it a 3/5 they liked the character and locale, but feel it’s too easy and she doesn’t say much after the mission.
  • [link] to Kasumi’s Stolen Memory review at GameSpot.
Giving it a 6.5 they like the character’s skills, think it’s funny and like the story, but find the character uninteresting, feel it lacks memorable moments and think it’s way too short.
  • [link] to Kasumi’s Stolen Memory micro-review at Kotaku.
They like the new planet, but feel that it doesn’t fit and is boring.
  • [link] to Kasumi’s Stolen Memory review at G4TV.
They like the character and think the DLC is good overall, just would’ve fit better during the game and is too short.
  • [link] to Kasumi’s Stolen Memory review at GameZone.
Giving it a 6.0 they like the gameplay, character and ending, but feel that it’s way too expensive for the limited value.
  • [link] to Kasumi’s Stolen Memory video review at GameTrailers.
    [html]<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=64264"/><param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=64264" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object>[/html]
I thought that Stolen Memory would be good, the character looks interesting and the gameplay sounds fun, but with all the reviews stating how it’s way too short for the price I think I’ll just pass on it. Which means that I also won’t pick up Firewalker just yet as I have no intention to play the game for one little piece of free DLC. Ah well, maybe they’ll have better DLC in the future (they didn’t do so hot with Dragon Age either).

Future Mass Effect

And finally this section contains some references as to what’s coming in Mass Effect’s future. It’s mostly references to Mass Effect 3, as no new DLC has been announced yet, but there’s also at least one rumor of future DLC.

  • [link] to Mass Effect 3 wish list at GameInformer.
The people of GameInformer list what they’d like to see in the last part of the trilogy.
  • [link] to Mass Effect 3 quality comment at VG247.

  • [link] to “Tricks Up Our Sleeves” interview at Ugo.
A brief interview with the BioWare docs in which they note that they’ve got tricks up their sleeve for Mass Effect 3.
  • [link] to Mass Effect 3 Development Confirmed at VG247.
They’ve always said that Mass Effect is a trilogy, but they haven’t really confirmed the third part yet.
  • [link] to Rumored Liara DLC at The Escapist.
Rumors are floating about about some DLC based around Liara.
I seem to recall hearing those DLC rumors as far back as the original release of Mass Effect 2 (though not with the detail listed in the post). And since I quite like Liara I hope that it’s true. But I also hope that she’s not being added as a squadmate (based on how they treated the previous two squadmate DLCs and how that wouldn’t guarantee her survival for ME3) and I hope that it doesn’t resolve the whole Shadow Broker thing (just perhaps Liara’s involvement with the character). I hope it’s bigger than the previous DLC and that it’s post-game end; kind of like a mini expansion. But we’ll see.

Anyway, that’s all regarding Mass Effect for now. I don’t really expect that much more until E3 (mid June).
