Mass Effect 2 - Holiday Updates

Post by Shir'le E. Illios »

As I promised yesterday here are the updates for Mass Effect 2 from over the holiday period (up to about now). Again I’ve split it up in sections and again I won’t quote every article. There is a lot here, including a lot of videos, so sit back and enjoy. :)

[b:2behza5y]Classes[/b:2behza5y]

To start there are a couple of class updates. I think before the holidays we already had the Adept, the Engineer and the Sentinel, but now we’ve got videos for the other three classes as well.

First we have the Infiltrator[/url:2behza5y]:

[center:2behza5y]
<object id='ignplayer' width='640' height='360' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=masseffect2_trl_infiltrator_122109&object=14235019'/></object>
[/center:2behza5y]
IGN also has a Q&A with Christina Norman[/url:2behza5y] for the class. And you can find a class description at the official site[/url:2behza5y].

Second we have the Vanguard[/url:2behza5y]:

[center:2behza5y]
<object id='ignplayer' width='640' height='360' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=masseffect2_trl_vanguard_10510&object=14235019'/></object>
[/center:2behza5y]
Again there is a Q&A with Christina Norman[/url:2behza5y] for this class. And you can find details up on the official page[/url:2behza5y] as well.

And hot off the presses is the Soldier[/url:2behza5y]:

[center:2behza5y]
<object id='ignplayer' width='640' height='360' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=masseffect2_trl_soldier_11210&object=14235019'/></object>
[/center:2behza5y]
IGN also has another Q&A with Christina Norman[/url:2behza5y]. The class page on the official website doesn’t seem to be up yet, but once it is I suspect that it will be here[/url:2behza5y].

[b:2behza5y]Characters[/b:2behza5y]

Next to videos for each of the classes they’ve also begun with releasing videos introducing a number of the character that can join the player’s squad. These videos are a combination of prerendered footage and ingame footage with the character giving a brief introduction.

First we have the Assassin Thane[/url:2behza5y]:

[center:2behza5y]
<object id='ignplayer' width='640' height='360' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=masseffect2_trl_assassin_10410&object=14235019'/></object>
[/center:2behza5y]
You can read more background on Thane’s character page[/url:2behza5y].

Then we have the Savage Grunt[/url:2behza5y]:

[center:2behza5y]
<object id='ignplayer' width='640' height='360' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=masseffect2_trl_savage_10410&object=14235019'/></object>
[/center:2behza5y]
You can read more background on Grunt’s character page[/url:2behza5y].

Third up is the Loyalist Miranda[/url:2behza5y]:

[center:2behza5y]
<object id='ignplayer' width='640' height='360' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=masseffect2_trl_miranda_10610&object=14235019' /></object>
[/center:2behza5y]
You can read more background on Miranda’s character page[/url:2behza5y].

And finally we have the Psychopath Subject Zero[/url:2behza5y]:

[center:2behza5y]
<object id='ignplayer' width='640' height='360' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=masseffect2_trl_subject_zero_11110&object=14235019'/></object>
[/center:2behza5y]
You can read more background on Subject Zero’s character page[/url:2behza5y].

[b:2behza5y]Videos[/b:2behza5y]

Over the holiday period a bunch of videos have been released as well (next to those I already posted above). To begin with there’s the Dirty Dozen Trailer[/url:2behza5y]; I think I already posted the preview of the trailer before the holidays, but this is the full three-minute trailer.

[center:2behza5y]
<object id='ignplayer' width='640' height='360' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=masseffect2_trl_fulltrailer_122309&object=14235019'/></object>
[/center:2behza5y]
GameSpot then has twelve minutes of gameplay in their On The Spot – Now Playing[/url:2behza5y] show:

[center:2behza5y]
<embed id="mymovie" width="640" height="391" flashvars="bwr=0&playerMode=embedded&movieAspect=16.9&mapp=embedded_640&gen=1&uvp=http%3A%2F%2Fvidtech.cbsinteractive.com%2Fplayer%2F1_3_0_1%2FCBSI_PLAYER.swf&adp=http%3A%2F%2Fvidtech.cbsinteractive.com%2Fplugins%2Fadp%2F1_3_0%2FCBSI_AdPlugin.swf&smode=fit&viewMode=sd&autoPlay=false&paramsXML=http%3A%2F%2Fuk.gamespot.com%2Fpages%2Fvideo_player%2Fxml.php%3Fid%3D6244193%26mode%3Dembedded%26width%3D640%26height%3D391%26newplayer%3D1&skinXML=http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/cn ... 40_169.xml" wmode="opaque" allowscriptaccess="always" scale="noScale" salign="lt" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" name="mymovie" style="" src="http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/cn ... dothea.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"/>
[/center:2behza5y]
GameSpot also has two gameplay videos (1[/url:2behza5y], 2[/url:2behza5y]):

[center:2behza5y]
<embed id="mymovie" width="640" height="391" flashvars="bwr=0&playerMode=embedded&movieAspect=16.9&mapp=embedded_640&gen=1&uvp=http%3A%2F%2Fvidtech.cbsinteractive.com%2Fplayer%2F1_3_0_1%2FCBSI_PLAYER.swf&adp=http%3A%2F%2Fvidtech.cbsinteractive.com%2Fplugins%2Fadp%2F1_3_0%2FCBSI_AdPlugin.swf&smode=fit&viewMode=sd&autoPlay=false&paramsXML=http%3A%2F%2Fuk.gamespot.com%2Fpages%2Fvideo_player%2Fxml.php%3Fid%3D6245094%26mode%3Dembedded%26width%3D640%26height%3D391%26newplayer%3D1&skinXML=http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/cn ... 40_169.xml" wmode="opaque" allowscriptaccess="always" scale="noScale" salign="lt" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" name="mymovie" style="" src="http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/cn ... dothea.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"/>

Over on GamesRadar they have a video interview with Dr. Ray Muzyka[/url:2behza5y]

[center:2behza5y]
<object width="325" height="300">

</object>
[/center:2behza5y]
IGN also has a video interview[/url:2behza5y], this one with Casey Hudson:

[center:2behza5y]
<object id='ignplayer' width='640' height='360' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=ces10ford_masseffect2_inv_010810&object=14235019'/></object>
[/center:2behza5y]
And another video interview with Casey Hudson[/url:2behza5y] can be found at GameTrailers:

[b:2behza5y]Articles[/b:2behza5y]

Next to a bunch of videos (as you can see above) there were also a bunch of articles posted over the last few weeks, including some interviews and some hands-on impressions.

First there’s an interview with Dr. Ray Muzyka[/url:2behza5y] over at IncGamers (which seems to be down as I write this). The article covers all things BioWare, so includes general stuff and talks about Dragon Age: Origins and Star Wars: The Old Republic as well. But there’s a good bit on Mass Effect 2 in there too.

Around Christmas Chris Priestly (BioWare Community Coordinator) posted an explanation[/url:2behza5y] on how importing saved games works, how that affects bonuses and some details on Mass Effect 2’s “New Game +[/url:2behza5y]”. To give a brief excerpt:

[quote:2behza5y]Up until now we have only discussed the plot impacts of this feature, however, there are also certain gameplay perks as well. If you finished ME1 as a high level character you will receive greater bonuses than those who finished at lower levels. Ex, if you finished ME1 as a level 35 character, you will receive a bonus, but if you finished ME1 as a level 50 character, your bonus will be larger. That being said these bonuses will not put new playthrough characters at a severe disadvantage. For example, some of these bonuses include a monetary boost at the start of the game, or additional research resources for use at the Normandy’s Tech Lab. Another perk is if you finished the game as a Paragon or Renegade, part of your alignment will carry over making it easier to access certain dialogue options.[/quote:2behza5y]
BrightHub has an interview with Development Director Dorian Kieken[/url:2behza5y]. The article covers various things such as UI, platforms, main and side content and nudity.

RPGamer has an impressions article[/url:2behza5y] where they talk some about the hands-on time they’ve had with the game. It talks a bit about the shooter gameplay, Biotics, conversation, inventory, and loading screens. Overall they seem quite positive based on their brief gameplay.

Another hands-on article[/url:2behza5y] comes from IGN, who had a chance to sit down with the game during the Consumer Electronics Show held earlier this month. It’s a fairly brief article where they talk a bit about one of the missions in the game for recruiting one of the squad members (namely the Salarian professor Mordin Solis).

Kotaku also has a Mass Effect 2 article, this one titled “Mass Effect 2 Sets Its Sights on the Modern Warfare Crowd[/url:2behza5y]”. In it they talk a bit about how Mass Effect 2 has improved third-person shooter mechanics with which BioWare hopes to attract players who traditionally might not be attracted to roleplaying games. Though the roleplaying elements are said to be just as strong as in the previous Mass Effect game (if not stronger), they claim that the shooter gameplay is on-par with the current shooter games.

BioWare also posted another update to their blog titles “Enemy Defenses in Mass Effect 2[/url:2behza5y]”. In it Christina Norman talks about how they’ve changed the defenses and resists from the first game. Here’s an excerpt:

[quote:2behza5y]For Mass Effect 2 we’ve combined enemy resists with defensive shields, armor, and barriers. These defenses are displayed in a bar over the enemy’s health bar. As long as the bar is visible, your target is resistant to powers, but all powers deplete his defense bar. Once the defense bar is gone, he is vulnerable to all your powers. Only powerful enemies have a defense bar, weaker enemies are always vulnerable.[/quote:2behza5y]

[b:2behza5y]Expanded Universe[/b:2behza5y]

I wasn’t sure how to name this section, but it deals with additional products next to the game itself; a books, a comic, the soundtrack and even action figures.

To start with the comic, it seems that the first issue of the Mass Effect: Redemption comic has been released[/url:2behza5y]. The comic follows Dr. Liara T’Soni (the Asari squadmate from the first game) as she undertakes “a deadly mission of extraordinary importance in the Milky Way’s lawless Terminus System”. The second[/url:2behza5y] and third[/url:2behza5y] part of the comic aren’t available yet, but can be pre-ordered. They do have a preview for the second comic up though. Each issue sells for about $3.50.

A bit stranger perhaps is that is seems that DC Comics is planning a number of Mass Effect 2 action figures[/url:2behza5y]. From the images it seems that they’re at least planning a male Shephard, Thane, Tali and Grunt. Though they can already be ordered, they won’t come out until late August; there’s also no pricing yet.

As far as music goes, BioWare has announced that Jack Wall has returned to compose the music[/url:2behza5y] (news also at GameSpot[/url:2behza5y]). Jack Wall did music for the first Mass Effect game (as well as for Jade Empire, Myst III and IV and Splinter Cell) and he’s composing music for the sequel as well. Sam Hulick and David Kates are also returning as composers for Mass Effect and the three are joined by newcomer Jimmy Hinson. The soundtrack will be available for download on January 19th. The soundtrack is already listed on Amazon.com[/url:2behza5y] (and on Amazon.co.uk[/url:2behza5y]).

And finally, BioWare has announced the third Mass Effect novel, named “Mass Effect: Retribution[/url:2behza5y]”. Though it won’t be released until late July, it is already listed on Amazon.com[/url:2behza5y] for $7.99.

[quote:2behza5y] Retribution is set in the universe fans know well from the video game and novel series—one in which humanity has explored the very farthest reaches of the universe, only to discover the ruthless Reapers, a race bent on extinguishing all organic life. One man is bent on discovering the Reapers' secrets, the mysterious Illusive Man, the leader of a pro-human, black ops group, Cerberus. And he's devised the perfect plan: implant a human subject with Reaper technology in order to study the enemy.

He also has the perfect test subject—Paul Grayson, an ex-Cerberus operative. Grayson betrayed Cerberus in order to save his daughter. So when Grayson is kidnapped and made the subject of Cerberus' evil experiments, the Illusive Man will finally have his revenge.[/quote:2behza5y]
That description comes from the official website[/url:2behza5y] where the new book is now listed alongside the other two and the comics.

Phew; that’s it. I’m sure that there will be more Mass Effect news to report in the coming two weeks (after which the game will be released and we’ll probably get a bunch of reviews as well). But for now this should keep you busy for a while. ;)
