Mass Effect 2 - Video Interviews

Post by Shir'le E. Illios »

With about an hour left before I leave, I've got a couple more Mass Effect 2 video interviews for you. They're all pretty much spoiler-free I think.

The first is a text interview over at ComputerAndVideoGames[/url:1p9acyvd] with Producer Adrien Cho. Here's an excerpt:

[quote:1p9acyvd][b:1p9acyvd]Q1 2010 is pretty packed with releases now...[/b:1p9acyvd]

[b:1p9acyvd]Cho:[/b:1p9acyvd] It's actually still Q4 for EA. There's a whole bunch of titles but I'm not worried about it because it's a great game. It didn't really matter when we were going to put it out, I think it's going to blow people out of the water. You've seen the beginning - it doesn't actually let go once you start, it hits the ground running.

We're so proud of the game that I'm not worried at all. I feel like this is actually the best game that has come out of our studio in the history of BioWare. Ray was talking to me about this; of all the games we've made so far this was able to encapsulate everything we've been trying to do in games and present it in such a digestible form.

Each game we've put out has been great, each game has flaws, where as this one represents the pinnacle BioWare experience. If you're going to play one BioWare game ever in your life, this is the one to try.[/quote:1p9acyvd]
Strong words. ;)

The first video interview, with gameplay, is from GameSpot's Today On the Spot[/url:1p9acyvd] show.

[center:1p9acyvd]
<embed id="mymovie" width="640" height="391" flashvars="bwr=0&playerMode=embedded&movieAspect=16.9&mapp=embedded_640&gen=1&uvp=http%3A%2F%2Fvidtech.cbsinteractive.com%2Fplayer%2F1_3_0_1%2FCBSI_PLAYER.swf&adp=http%3A%2F%2Fvidtech.cbsinteractive.com%2Fplugins%2Fadp%2F1_3_0%2FCBSI_AdPlugin.swf&smode=fit&viewMode=sd&autoPlay=false&paramsXML=http%3A%2F%2Fuk.gamespot.com%2Fpages%2Fvideo_player%2Fxml.php%3Fid%3D6244171%26mode%3Dembedded%26width%3D640%26height%3D391%26newplayer%3D1&skinXML=http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/cn ... 40_169.xml" wmode="opaque" allowscriptaccess="always" scale="noScale" salign="lt" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" name="mymovie" style="" src="http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/cn ... dothea.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"/>
[/center:1p9acyvd]
IGn also has two video interviews up. The first is with Dr. Ray Muzyka[/url:1p9acyvd] in which he talks about why he feels Mass Effect 2 is great:

[center:1p9acyvd]
<object id='ignplayer' width='480' height='270' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=masseffect2_ray_int_121709&object=14235019'/></object>
[/center:1p9acyvd]
The second video interview is with Producer Adrien Cho[/url:1p9acyvd]:

[center:1p9acyvd]
<object id='ignplayer' width='480' height='270' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=masseffect2_art_int_121809&object=14235019'/></object>
[/center:1p9acyvd]
Finally there's two little bits from Shacknews. First is that BioWare is looking forward to Mass Effect 3[/url:1p9acyvd]. Here's the entire text:

[quote:1p9acyvd]After the exhausting effort that went into developing Mass Effect 2 it would be reasonable to expect the team was ready for a break. Not BioWare, or at least not Project Director Casey Hudson. Speaking to the press before showing off the game at a recent event in Edmonton Hudson said, "We're looking forward to it [Mass Effect 3] and it should be more fun for us."

This comment came after Hudson went into some detail about the challenges faced during development with perfecting the system for carrying over saves from the first game. Managing all the potential player choices and their outcomes took such a commitment to making it work that he said, "I'd be really surprised if anyone else tried to do it."

"Mass Effect 3," Hudson said, "will be easier because we don't have to worry about continuity into the next one." While no one ever expected the Mass Effect world to go away after the Shepard trilogy, it sounds like they're pretty dead set to wrap the current story arc up in the third game.[/quote:1p9acyvd]
The second bit of news is that Draon Age has twice the dialog of Mass Effect 2[/url:1p9acyvd]. Again the entire text:

[quote:1p9acyvd]Dragon Age: Origins takes a step back toward the traditional dialog system developer BioWare used for all their role playing games prior to Mass Effect. While selecting phrases verbatim might feel old school compared to the emotional responses in Mass Effect don't think for a moment that they didn't put as much into it.

Quite the opposite is true. Despite the cinematic nature of Mass Effect 2, in comparing the dialog systems of the two games BioWare co-founder Dr. Greg Zeschuk told me that Dragon Age: Origins packed over twice as many dialog options. Why so much? In Dragon Age a large proportion of the potential responses are based on the race and class you've chosen for your main character, their skills and demeanor, and the decisions made in developing the relationships. For every group of possible responses you see on any given play through of the game, there's probably an equal number hidden to handle all the other potential combinations as Zeschuk explained it.

For many fans that's sure to pique their interest to make another run through Dragon Age: Origins while waiting for Mass Effect to arrive next month.[/quote:1p9acyvd]
And that's it. :)
