Mass Effect 2 - Sentinel Class & Cinematic Trailer

Post by Shir'le E. Illios »

Last weekend was a busy television weekend for games. This is because Spike TV's VGA awards show (I get the impression that they're trying to be the Oscars of videogames) was on, including a bunch of new sequels revealed. Nothing Mass Effect though (except that Mass Effect 2 lost out to God of War 3 for "most anticipated game").

But right before the VGAs IGN had its own show (on Fox of all places). By all accounts the show was rather uninteresting, but one nice thing is that they showed (a television-edit of) a new cinematic trailer for Mass Effect 2. That in moment.

Before that Mass Effect 2 revealed details on the next class: the Sentinel. As you might recall from Mass Effect 1 the Sentinel class uses a combination of biotics and tech. Now in Mass Effect 2 they've done their best to truly make the class stand apart from the others (as they've done for every class).

Here's the video[/url:hd85l12x] for the class as seen on IGN:

[center:hd85l12x]
<object id='ignplayer' width='480' height='270' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=masseffect2_trl_sentinel_121109&object=14235019'/></object>
[/center:hd85l12x]
To accompany the video IGN also has an interview with lead combat designer Christina Norman[/url:hd85l12x] giving more details on the class. Here's an excerpt:

[quote:hd85l12x][b:hd85l12x]IGN: What style of play is the Sentinel geared towards? Will those that love pistols still have reason to go with this class?[/b:hd85l12x]

[b:hd85l12x]Christina Norman:[/b:hd85l12x] The Sentinel is an incredibly versatile class that adapts to your playstyle. Not sure what to play? Play a Sentinel.

If you're an aggressive player, the extra toughness of the Sentinel will support you using powers or weapons to take down enemies. If you love running and gunning, but you also love powers, the Sentinel is definitely your class.

If you're a defensive player, the Sentinel is really effective at staying back, using powers to take down and disable enemies. While the Sentinel doesn't have every power that the Engineer and Adept heave, he has a good variety, and the survivability to outlast his enemies.[/quote:hd85l12x]
I already reported on Mass Effect 2's voice cast, but there's a video up for that now as well showing some of the cast members and the characters they voice. Here's the video at YouTube[/url:hd85l12x]:

Over at GamerLimit there's an interview with Project Director Casey Hudson[/url:hd85l12x]. Casey's answers are quite big (which is a good thing) explaining things in good detail. Here's an excerpt:

[quote:hd85l12x]In Mass Effect 1, part of the problem with it, because the weapon was a skill, your character might have a low skill in a given weapon, and that means you as a player might be able to get the reticule on an enemy, but your character would be unable to hit them because a character has a low skill or the weapon is a poor weapon. We’ve moved those things onto different kinds of powers, and so now the character is able to fire as well as you can, and just really adds to the precision of the combat. But at the same time, all the same depth is there in terms of your character progression. We put those things more into powers that really get to the fantasy fulfillment of each class, so each class feels deeper and more varied.[/quote:hd85l12x]
And finally, as I said at the start, IGN released a new cinematic trailer for Mass Effect 2. Or rather a preview of a cinematic trailer, since it's a cut-down version meant for television broadcasting. As the trailer says, later this month the full trailer will be available on Xbox Live (and after that it'll be available online as well). The trailer is created by Blur (who also created the Star Wars: The Old Republic cinematic trailer and the Sacred Ashes trailer for Dragon Age: Origins; I'll have to see the full ME2 trailer but so far those other two are still better in my book). Here's the trailer at YouTube[/url:hd85l12x]:

Can't wait to see the entire thing. :)
