Today some details on the renewed Adept class for Mass Effect 2 have been released. And it seems that while the class was already heavily based on biotics in the original game they're upping the ante for the next installment. I get the impression that this time around you can entirely rely on your (souped-up) biotic powers with this class if you so choose.
But take a look yourself. First there's this brief Q&A[/url:3plvujyq] with lead combat designer, Christina Norman. Here's an excerpt:
[quote:3plvujyq][b:3plvujyq]IGN: Have any biotic skills been removed from the game? Have any been added?[/b:3plvujyq]
[b:3plvujyq]Christina Norman:[/b:3plvujyq] The feel of biotic powers has changed so dramatically that in a way every power has been removed and totally redone. You can precisely arc powers around corners or over cover to hit hidden enemies. The angle at which you strike enemies with powers matters now. You can knock enemies into pits, or pull them towards you to take them down with gunfire, or pull them into the air for massive falling damage. We've really improved your ability to precisely direct your powers to take down enemies.
With that said many favorites from Mass Effect 1 will return like throw, warp, lift (now called pull), and singularity. There will be new biotic powers as well like shockwave.[/quote:3plvujyq]
But perhaps you'll get a better idea by just watching the video of the Adept in action:
[center:3plvujyq]
<object id='ignplayer' width='480' height='270' data='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' type='application/x-shockwave-flash'><param name='movie' value='http://media.ign.com/ev/embed.swf' /><param name='allowfullscreen' value='true' /><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always' /><param name='bgcolor' value='#000000' /><param name='flashvars' value='vgroup=masseffect2_trl_adept_112309&object=14235019'/></object>
[/center:3plvujyq]
Looks impressive. I played an Adept in the first game and though the Vanguard class[/url:3plvujyq] looked fun, I think I'll play an Adept again in the new one.
Oh, and a bit older news, but it also seems that they revealed the final box cover art[/url:3plvujyq]. Not terribly impressive (and not that relevant to me since I'm getting the digital version anyway), but there you go.
[[b:3plvujyq]UPDATE[/b:3plvujyq]]
Bah, not two seconds after I posted this I came across another Mass Effect 2 video [i:3plvujyq]and[/i:3plvujyq] got reminded of two other details to share.
First of all IncGamers has a video interview[/url:3plvujyq] with lead technical artist Adrien Cho and CEO/co-founder of BioWare Dr. Ray Muzyka. They don't seem to offer an embed code for the video (so you'll have to follow the link[/url:3plvujyq] to see it), but they [i:3plvujyq]do[/i:3plvujyq] have a text transcript[/url:3plvujyq] as well. Here's an excerpt:
[quote:3plvujyq][Dr. Ray Muzyka]: The shooter combat is one aspect, and as much as anything, Mass Effect 2 is a shooter as much as it is a role-playing game. We've amped up the intensity of a lot of the role-playing elements too – the exploration, and progression, and the characterisation and story and so on – but the shooter combat is really awesome. It's intense, it's very precise, you get to target enemies, you get to place your squad on the battlefield, you can control moment to moment what they do; the Tech and Biotic abilities, there are some interesting emergent effects and combinations of powers, the weapons have been amped up so you get to mod them and improve them and research new abilities...[/quote:3plvujyq]
Second is that they've released the PC system requirements for Mass Effect 2. They're on a number of websites, but here's the one from IGN[/url:3plvujyq]:
