Dragon Age: Origins - Review Flood

Post by Shir'le E. Illios »

And when I say “flood” I mean “the dam has burst and we’re sitting on the roof waiting for a rescue helicopter”... preferable one that carries a copy of Dragon Age: Origins. ;)

But yes, there really are a [i:2belyeoy]lot[/i:2belyeoy] of reviews. In FireFox I’m using a plugin that reduces tabs pretty much to just their icon, and this is the first time I’ve ever seen the tabs list go to a second row (I setup Firefox to use multiple rows). As such I won’t quote all reviews here; most I’ll just leave to listing at the bottom of this post. Instead I’ll just make a selection of reviews, mainly those with movies, those from major sites and those that I feel notable for some reason or another.

After that I’ve also got a couple of non-review Dragon Age: Origins updates, including a link to the Dragon Age: Origins manual for download.

Let’s start with GameSpot, who give the game a [b:2belyeoy]9.5[/b:2belyeoy] and who include a video review. Here’s an excerpt from the text review[/url:2belyeoy] and the embedded video review[/url:2belyeoy]:

[quote:2belyeoy] When was the last time you felt totally lost in a fantasy gameworld? When was the last time you played a game with such a well-crafted and enjoyable story that you knew you’d remember it for a long, long time? Dragon Age: Origins is that kind of game, so rich and involving that you are powerless to resist its wiles and whims, so touching and triumphant that your mind and heart will be moved. In the fictional land of Ferelden, you meet memorable characters and fight for a cause you believe in, and it's this backdrop that makes developer BioWare's newest role-playing game so extraordinary. Dragon Age is more than a well-crafted story, however: It's a lengthy, intricate, and thoroughly entertaining adventure that's easy to fall in love with.[/quote:2belyeoy]
[center:2belyeoy]
<embed id="mymovie" width="432" height="362" flashvars="playerMode=embedded&movieAspect=4.3&flavor=EmbeddedPlayerVersion&skin=http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/cn ... ight%3D362" wmode="transparent" allowscriptaccess="always" quality="high" name="mymovie" style="" src="http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/cn ... oteus2.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"/>
[/center:2belyeoy]
After a somewhat surprisingly lukewarm review from IGN AU we now also got reviews from IGN UK and IGN US which are luckily much more positive. Here’s an excerpt from the IGN UK review[/url:2belyeoy] which scores [b:2belyeoy]9.2[/b:2belyeoy]:

[quote:2belyeoy]These are dark times. Against the backdrop of backstabbing politics, racial unrest and the shadow of civil war, the remaining few of the Grey Wardens have begun to hear rumours of Darkspawn movements. Their worst fear is about to come true: the Archdemon is on the move once again. Only a unified force will be able to fight this coming Blight. In Ferelden, unity is a dirty word.

Things are about to get a little messy.[/quote:2belyeoy]
And an excerpt from IGN US’s review[/url:2belyeoy], scoring it [b:2belyeoy]9.0[/b:2belyeoy], along with the video review[/url:2belyeoy]:

[quote:2belyeoy]This is the fractured world your hero or heroine inhabits, a world which can evoke Tolkien-esque imagery. Ferelden has an impressively vast history (as your codex will indicate to you through your adventure). The biggest issue, that arises with the storyline of Dragon Age is that plot elements suffer from repetitiveness. Even though different cities house unique quest events, they all incorporate similar motivating factors – assassination, betrayal or murder. Even though the results of your actions vary, it can become a bit stale. Not every single city needs Macbeth, King Lear or other Shakespearean styled machinations to drive the action forward.[/quote:2belyeoy]
[center:2belyeoy]
<embed src='http://videomedia.ign.com/ev/ev.swf' flashvars='object_ID=682217&downloadURL=http://pcmovies.ign.com/pc/video/articl ... rking="all%"' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' width='433' height='360'></embed>
[/center:2belyeoy]
One of the most positive reviews I’ve seen however comes from GiantBomb[/url:2belyeoy], who give it [b:2belyeoy]five stars[/b:2belyeoy]. This is both a text review and a video review, which follows (with an excerpt from the text):

[quote:2belyeoy] At its core, Dragon Age is a traditional party-based tactical role-playing game where you command a party of four characters with varying abilities though large dungeons as you move through a grand story arc. Actions and spells are assigned to each individual party member by pausing the game mid-battle and issuing orders. Although the game comes with a fairly robust tactical AI editor that lets you set some basic if/else scenarios, you'll probably spend a good portion of time in pause mode, manually issuing commands to your entire group, especially if you're working with more than one mage or if you're the type to obsess over the survival of each party member.[/quote:2belyeoy]
[center:2belyeoy]
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shoc ... on=9,0,0,0" width="640" height="360" id="gb_player" align="middle"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="movie" value="http://www.giantbomb.com/video/video.swf" /><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="flashvars" value="paramsURI=http%3A//www.giantbomb.com/video/params/1579/?w=1"><param name="videoURI" value="http://media.giantbomb.com/video/vr_dra ... lv"><param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /><embed src="http://www.giantbomb.com/video/video.swf" quality="high" bgcolor="#000000" width="640" height="360" name="gb_player" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="always" allowFullScreen="true" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" flashvars="paramsURI=http%3A//www.giantbomb.com/video/params/1579/?w=1" /></object>
[/center:2belyeoy]
As usual for reviews at The Escapist[/url:2belyeoy] they don’t give a score, but do have a video accompaniment (which I don’t think I can embed) to the text review. Overall it’s very positive as well, despite the LotR jokes. Here’s an excerpt:

[quote:2belyeoy][i:2belyeoy]Dragon Age: Origins[/i:2belyeoy] is set in the fictional land of "NotMiddleEarthia," AKA Ferelden, which is inhabited by the usual gang of races. You can play as one of three races (Human, Dwarf or Elf) and one of three classes (Warrior, Rogue or Mage). You can even choose your background from one of six options, so your character's personal history may vary somewhat, as will your abilities and overall gameplay experience, depending on your selections.

What won't change are the basics: The Darkspawn (AKA "NotOrcs") have begun to invade Ferelden and it is up to the legendary order of Grey Wardens (AKA "NotDunedainRangers") to assemble an alliance of the forces of good to drive them back using swords and sorcery. You will be presented with the option to accumulate various party members from time to time, and when you set out on your adventures, you will be able to select which party members will go with you, according to your needs or personal preferences. And you will go on quests, battle monsters and loot their corpses.[/quote:2belyeoy]
Surprisingly low-scoring (compared to just about every other review) and seemingly negative is the review at Eurogamer[/url:2belyeoy] with an [b:2belyeoy]8[/b:2belyeoy], though the review reads more negative than that. The main thing I get from that review is that this might simply not be the right kind of game for the reviewer and that he might prefer other kinds of games instead. Either way, here’s an excerpt:

[quote:2belyeoy]Small wonder, then, that super-studio BioWare's return to the realms that made its name has attracted such intense, devotional interest. It might have shed the formal connection to Dungeons & Dragons, but otherwise Dragon Age: Origins might as well be a sequel to Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, and the world is willing it to be a classic. Over half a decade in the making, vast in scope, neck-deep in loot, lore and labyrinthine plotting - if classics were measured by the yard and made out of man-hours, Dragon Age would stand head and shoulders above them all.

But they're not. And although it's a work of great accomplishment and craftsmanship - and no small amount of ambition - Dragon Age is sorely lacking in the things that make a truly great role-playing game, or any game for that matter: vision, inspiration, soul.[/quote:2belyeoy]
Let me just say that based on everything else I’ve seen and heard so far I very strongly disagree with the reviewer.

Still, it’s not the lowest-scoring review that I’ve seen. That ‘honor’ goes to the review at Destructoid[/url:2belyeoy] which gives the game a [b:2belyeoy]7.5[/b:2belyeoy]. The review starts of fairly positive and then goes into a list of problems it has with the game. Here’s an excerpt:

[quote:2belyeoy] It pains me to say it, but the tactics system doesn't work even half as well as BioWare would like us to think it does. For the first fifteen hours or so, players don't have to worry about it, but once the game ramps up the difficulty, allied characters gladly march into death, helped along by the fact that the A.I is pure garbage. Suddenly, players find themselves bogged down in endless and pedantic micromanagement as they blindly experiment with different tactics in a vain bid to keep allies alive. The pre-set tactics provided for players that don't like micromanagement are worthless, and require constant tweaking.[/quote:2belyeoy]
But I think that one of the comment on the Destructoid review might have an explanation for why that review, as well as the Eurogamer one, seem fairly negative and for both it rings true in my ears:

[quote:2belyeoy]If people are expecting a Fallout 3 or Oblivion with some BioWare flourishes, it doesn't look like this is going to be a pleasant game for them. The story and characters will be fun & engaging, but the combat will come across as a micromanaged clusterfuckery.

On the other hand, it seems that people who are approaching this as something in the vein of Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights are thoroughly enjoying it, while still consistently giving caveats about difficulty spikes and the clunky console UI.[/quote:2belyeoy]
Kotaku[/url:2belyeoy] does its usual list of point that they loved and hated, without giving a score, and they seem very positive. Their main complaints are that it still has a number of (small but noticable) bugs and that the frame rate on the PS3 is a bit up-and-down. Here’s is an excerpt listing one of the things that they loved:

[quote:2belyeoy][b:2belyeoy]You Gotta Have Friends:[/b:2belyeoy] Expanding on the excellent character work established in titles like Knights of the Old Republic and Baldur's Gate, BioWare once again provides an amazing cast of characters to fight by your side as you travel the twisted paths of Dragon Age: Origins. Each of your NPC companions has a distinct personality, and while they may seem rather cookie-cutter at first glance, exploring their origins and motivations reveals a truly complex collection of individuals. You'll Travel with them on their own personal quests as you progress through the game, establishing bonds and perhaps even falling in love with one of them. You'll grow attached, and should any of them part ways with you, you'll feel it acutely.

It isn't just your party members, either. Each NPC is handled with great care and attention to detail - even the ones who only have one line of text, spoken over and over again. Enchantment?[/quote:2belyeoy]
I already mentioned the PC Gamer UK print-magazine review in an earlier news update, but it seems that they have now put the review online[/url:2belyeoy]. Calling it “the RPG of the decade” they give it a [b:2belyeoy]9.4[/b:2belyeoy]; here’s an excerpt:

[quote:2belyeoy] What will be common to all is the combination of dialogue and combat. Whether you play as a human, elf or dwarf, a rogue, warrior or mage, a noble or a commoner, Dragon Age requires smart use of your wits and weapons. Combat is a combination of real-time fighting and turn-based handing out of orders. You have control of all in your current party (which has a maximum of four characters), as well as an elaborate Combat Tactics system that enables you to all but program your team's AI. But there's also an entire realm to explore, and a central, overwhelming theme of acculturation within its many towns and races. This is about politics, moral philosophy and love. And about killing dragons with swords.[/quote:2belyeoy]
One of the most enjoyable reviews I’ve read for the game comes from IncGamers[/url:2belyeoy], particularly because it gives a sense of what it is like playing the game and the emotional impact the story can have on you without giving any spoilers. A particularly strong example of this is the following excerpt:

[quote:2belyeoy]Dragon Age does a fantastic job of screwing with you on this, too. My elf mage, for instance, had to make some hard decisions in her origin story prior to joining the Grey Wardens and beginning the game proper. While many games might do a bad job of making you realise that these decisions are difficult, or returning to the consequences later, I felt genuinely conflicted about what I had done. On the one hand, I had no doubt I'd done the “right” thing, but at serious cost. Amazingly, this was revisited in a later and particularly introspective quest: upon being asked whether or not I felt guilt at my actions at the beginning, I didn't even think through each of the five options to try and work out which option would let me avoid combat or net me the “best” result. There was only one answer that I could give - “Yes” - and when I was told that I'd acted out of necessity and that I should forgive myself as I had already been forgiven by those I'd acted against, I actually felt absolved.[/quote:2belyeoy]
There are many more reviews (which I’ll list below), but I’ll finish with the video review from GameTrailers[/url:2belyeoy] giving an overall score of [b:2belyeoy]9.1[/b:2belyeoy].

[center:2belyeoy]
<div style="width: 480px;"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shoc ... on=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap ... 7"/><param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=58517" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object>
[/center:2belyeoy]

Next to reviews there are a few other bits of news.

First it seems that IGN are working on a guide[/url:2belyeoy] for the game. It’s rather bare-bones right now, but I’m sure that in the coming days/weeks they’ll fill it with useful and less-than-useful information.

PC Games Hardware has a system requirements article[/url:2belyeoy] where they look at what kind of PC performs how well with the game. It’s a ncie read, but they’re missing the recently updated system requirements information; the minimum requirements have been lowered from dual-core to single-core, and the recommended have been lowered from quad-core to dual-core.

And instead of reading the article you can just go to YouGamers[/url:2belyeoy] and have their app do a system requirements check (though last I looked they too are missing the lowered requirements).

For those who want to know the ins-and-outs fo the rules system behind Dragon Age is might be nice to know that GameBanshee have updated their content[/url:2belyeoy] to list the specialization talents, details on the ten main companions and an advancement table. This last one can be particularly handy for planning out your talents and skills.

Then IGN is reporting[/url:2belyeoy] that the band “Thirty Seconds to Mars” is bringing the song “This is War” to Dragon Age: Origins. A quick YouTube search reveals the following video:

[center:2belyeoy][youtube:2belyeoy]GmYfRt-hGpI[/youtube:2belyeoy][/center:2belyeoy]
Then GameZone has a quick interview[/url:2belyeoy] with BioWare’s executive producer Mark Darrah. Here’s an excerpt:

[quote:2belyeoy][b:2belyeoy]Words like epic and immersive are often tossed about lightly but don’t seem to have the weight that one would hope. With this game, in the incredible amount of story, the interconnective storylines, the branching storylines – what that a daunting task in and of itself?[/b:2belyeoy]

[b:2belyeoy]Mark:[/b:2belyeoy] It really was. This is a story that has 800,000 words of spoken dialogue, a million words in the game itself. And that is supplemented by … well, an uncounted number of words of supporting documentation, so I think when you are trying to tell a story of this magnitude, you can’t just tell the story, you have to build the universe that it exists in or you start to see the edges of the box, you realize that ‘oh, this is just a painted backdrop and behind it exists nothing.’ There needs to be something back there so there is twice as much or more that was created in terms of storytelling, in terms of world creation that isn’t even in the game but it just needs to be there to make it a real experience for the player.[/quote:2belyeoy]
And last, but not least, RPGWatch are reporting[/url:2belyeoy] that you can download the Dragon Age: Origins manual (in a lot of different languages) in pdf-format directly from EA. Here is the link to the manuals[/url:2belyeoy]. Having read the manual they are very insightful as well and should make it a bit easier to get into the game.

Anyway, that’s it for now. Enjoy. :)

I hope you don't have anything to do this weekend Shir'le, because if you start Dragon Age, you won't want to stop. While I've heard ever whine about the game and then some, I will say this: It IS a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. I've been sick the last three days and have been having coughing fits on some of the conversations between party members, and they all just happen randomly, one to another, the third may or may not but in, it's all seamless too. I know I said that I'd give a Review today (Friday), but yeah I'm going back in game.
