AAHHK!!! They've KILLED my precious drow!!! That really DOES suck. So what if you'd rather ascend to become the new incarnation of Eilistraee? What, they don't believe in her anymore?! WotC is murdering the franchise- they must have a Matron running things there.....

More surprises: alignment is linear, completely flat: lawful, good, unaligned, evil, chaotic. Also.... wait for it... Ghaunadaur survived the purge! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the Great Slime God lives, but drow are now excluded from his influence, as Lolth got a monopoly on drow souls. Ghaunadaur, the once sole rules and only god of the drow is now the master or... oozes, slimes and everything that's brainless and just wants to consume... How deprived of power can you get? He's a greater deity followed by brainless entities. It's like making Yondalla the goddess of herbs, worshiped only by herbs.

Actually, it's slightly worse than that. If it was those five then I could understand (as that's pretty much the same alignments that Warhammer uses where "Lawful" is better than "Good" and "Chaotic" is worse than "Evil" because the forces of Law and Chaos are pretty much about the existence or destruction of the universe).

Instead, they have the following alignments: "Lawful Good", "Good", "Unaligned", "Evil" and "Chaotic Evil". Which makes no sense at all. They keep the complexities of the two-axis system (by having combinations), but ignore half the combinations making the system far more confusing and complex. Heck, I could even understand it better if they'd taken the four corners (LG, CG, LE, CE) and merged the neutral alignments into those; that would've been a neat and clear system. But instead it is that mess that is more confusing than anything.

And, what's more, it completely ignores the Chaotic Good and Lawful Evil alignments, which have always been the two most enjoying alignments to play. Now if you want to be Chaotic Good you really just play "Good", making the Chaotic part seem much less important.

It looks to me as if they took what was one of the most interesting and varied alignment systems ever, straight-forward and yet covering the highest number of possibilities, and even failed to make it a simple and flat system (heck, I could've understood if they kept it to just Good versus Evil and had Law versus Chaos as some optional 'advanced' addition to that or something). Instead they made it just far more complicated by not really going either way with it.

Just... baffling. Makes me wonder what kind of hacks they've got working there.

Eek! Hacks is right. I could come up with something better in my sleep. What's the point of alignments if you can't use half of them? Might as well have just gone with the G/E axis and left it at that.

[quote="Argoth":1nf8mzm3]Now the "Redeemed Drow" epic destiny has a very disturbing description which relates to all the events of the Lady Penitent series, namely "nothing you do can ever change the fact that you are drow - a dark elf, a living symbol of mortal corruption and vice - and throughout the rest of your days, you must bear the burden of understanding that nothing you do can ever lift the stain that darkens your heart.".
And now the most painful part: "True redemption: Upon completing your last quest, you were plucked from the mortal world and escorted by Corellon's trusted servants to make your final journey to his dominion in the Astral Sea..." Then there's a description of being judged by Corellon, standing directly before him and... "In the blink of an eye, you awaken once more, your soul contained in a new infant body. As you take in your surroundings, your memories of the past fade as you take in the long, rich life that lies before you."

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, there is no mention whatsoever what race you are later on. All that is of drow in the character vanishes. Truly, the drow for ever belong to Lolth. This sucks.[/quote:1nf8mzm3]

Well, if the drow were cursed, there should be some way for some drow to somehow overcome that curse. But wiping their minds and making them into babies just erases the personality that "won" the battle against Lolth. I think that it would be far better if they could somehow revert to how the race was before Lolth corrupted them.

I don't know what that form would...or should...be, but I'm thinking that it should be even more beautiful than the regular drow form. Perhaps they could retain the black skin, but loose the daylight penalties and switch to a form of innate magic that fits in with the regular elven gods. However, having said that, if you don't have Eilistraee to be the "savior of the drow" the entire concept falls apart.

The 4ed book show is no where close to the promised 3 books tops. It now consists of 20 rule books and their supplements PLUS 12 campaigns. Not to mention all the Dragon and Dungeon magazine issues. This is just wrong.

Honestly, I'm fairly glad they did extend it. Core 4e is all but unplayable without a whole mountain of extra stuff added to actually make it fun, homebrew or otherwise.

Well, maybe I'm being overly critical, but that's the impression it had on me.

As I said before, Gygax will bring hell down on them, who knows.. maybe/hopefully they'll scrap 4th edition revive 3rd edition and say "sorry" before they go bankrupt.

Things my 3.5 cleric can do at level 1 that your epic wizard can NEVER do:

#6) Create a mundane clay vase.

Seriously, there's no way to make mundane items any more; all nonmagical containers/items of any kind are evidently now forgotten relics of a bygone era.
